| My belief is that every class is important, and every discussion is critical to a fully and complete knowledge of the course material. Just reading the texts is not enough. As a student, you need to be fully committed to exploring the readings on your own as well as with others. Thus, coming to class is vitally important to truly learning the material we will be discussing througout the semester. Furthermore, interaction with the class and noticeable effort on your part will reflect your willingness to engage with the literature and the class. I won't assign distinct point values to each class or for each assignment we do during class time over the course of the semester, but I will be keeping track of you involvement in a variety of ways. First, I will keep attendance. If you plan on missing a day, please let me know so that I can expect your absence; this will allow both you and I to prepare for any ground that will need to be made up when your gonc. This might be as simple as setting aside a handout for you or as important as collecting projects or rescheduling a test. In any case, please let me know if you will not be able to attend. Secondly, most days there will be a brief writing assignment or participation activity to start off the class. While these will be graded on a completed/not-complete scale, they will reflect your effort and show me how involved you are in the class readings. Needless to say, if you miss a majority of these, this aspect of your grade will suffer. Finally, I will be visually and orally observing your involvement in the course. The more you talk and interact with your classmates in our discussions, the better your grade will be in this area. A student who doesn't create or engage in dialogue shows me that they don't have much to say about what they're learning or if they're learning. The attendance and participation portion of this class is easily the simplest of the grades to obtain. Please make every effort to come to every class and be part of our community!
