The independent literature project is an individual reading report of a pre-approved multicultural book or text.  Students may select any text from the approved reading list, or they may seek approval for any multicultural text not on the approved list.   Students are to read their selected text carefully and analyze and evaluate its value as a cultural text.
Keeping in mind aspects of multicultural literature that we have discussed in class, you need to compose a 3-4 page paper providing insight into the text.  You may focus on any cultural conflicts that arise within the text or plot devices that spring from racial, cultural, or any number of other issues related to the text.  While your paper should focus on the multicultural aspects that are unique or important to the text, you will definitely want to address plot points, characterization, setting, and writing techniques at least briefly.  You have a great deal of freedom with this assignment and may use your personal judgment to create a paper that is both thought-provoking and insightful.
In addition to the 3-4 page paper, students will be required to present their text to the class.  Presentation should include a handout, PowerPoint presentation, visual aid, or some other interactive class activity to effectively communicate the ideas that you have gathered from the text. Within your presentation, avoid simply summarizing the text; instead, focus your presentation on the ideas and conclusion that you made within your paper.  Presentation should be around 5-8 minutes in length.
