Color Theory for grade 7: Color Wheel
A color wheel will be explained and demonstrated by mixing
all inherent colors with primary red, yellow and blue
watercolours. The
terms primary, and secondary will be introduced.
Objectives
- Differentiate characteristics and techniques
of a variety of media and to experiment with them.
Materials
- Round object to trace for wheel
- Paper
- Pencil
- Watercolors or tempera paint
- Medium size brush
Students will trace a round object to create the framework
for their color wheel. This will be divided into 6
sections. Starting with the primaries students will work
through mixing each color as seen in the demo. Each color
should be labeled with the terms noted above.

Modified for Grade 8:
Also introduce tertiary colours, and have students use
tempera to mix primary, secondary and tertiary colours.
Modified for Grade 9:
This serves as a review of the colour theory above that
students would have done in the two previous grades. Nines
will be introduced to the mixing properties of oil pastels, as
only the primaries should be blended together to create all
other colours in the colour wheel.
Here is the template that I use for both the grade 8 and 9
colour wheel lesson:
