when cheating wins

Everyone in Animal Town was very excited.   It was time for the annual pie-eating contest!   Marvin the Mouse was especially excited; this was his big chance to beat that cheating, lying Ralph the Rat!

All the contestants were seated at a long table oevrflowing with pies of all flavors.   Marvin was right next to Ralph.

"Good luck," said Marvin to Ralph, extending his hand.

"Yeah, you'll need it," replied Ralph with a smirk.   He didn't take Marvin's hand.

"Is everyone ready?   Ready...set...GO!" shouted the commentator.

All the contestants began stuffing pie into their faces as fast as they could.   Everyone was very quick, but no one was as quick as Ralph!   He as getting through pies almost twice as fast as everyone else!   Marvin heard a soft splatter at his feet.   His eyes widened with horrified surprise as he looked down.   For every pie Ralph was eating, he was throwing a pie on the ground!   The cheater!

Soon all the pies were gone and the judges counted up the empty tins.

"And the winner is....Ralph the Rat!" declared the commentetor.

Marvin was aghast.   "Fraud!" he cried.   "Fraud, fraud, fraud!   Ralph cheated!   He was throwing pies on the ground!"

Ralph reddened with anger.   "I was not!   If I don't win, I'll scream!   I want that trophy!   It's mine!   You're just jealous!   Prove I cheated!   Prove it!   Prove it!"

Marvin pointed at the colorful pile of mush near his feet and Ralph shouted out a long string of profanities.

"See?" said Marvin.   "I told you he cheated!   This is proof!"

The judges considered this for a moment.   Then one of them piped up.   "Ralph wins."

"But-but-but," sputtered Marvin.   "But cheating never pays!   My mommy says so!"

"True, but Ralph is louder and more obnoxious than you.   So Ralph wins."

Marvin began to cry and ran off the field as a jubilant Ralph accepted his trophy.   The judge's words stuck in Marvin's head for the rest of his life and he grew up to be a senile, loud, obnoxious old mouse.   No one liked him, but he always got his way.
