the little engine that couldn't
The Little Engine lived in a trainyard full of big, strong engines that could do a lot more things than him, and they made fun of him a lot.   Little Engine wanted more than anything to show them what he was made of, and one day he got his chance.   He was cruising along on one of the tracks when he saw a broken-down train full of toys and good food for the little boys and girls on the other side of the mountain.
"Help us, help us, Little Engine!" a doll on the train called out to him.
"Oh my gott, it's a talking doll!!!" screamed the Little Engine.
"Yeah, and you're a talking train," the doll reminded him.   "So...a little help, please?   Two other engines already passed by and thought they were too good for us."
"Of course I'll help you get over the mountain!" exclaimed the Little Engine.   So he chugged up the mountain, towing the train behind him.
Halfway up the slope, however, the Little Engine began to have trouble.   Noticing this, the toys and food began to cheer him on.
"Come on, you can do it!"
"Geez, can't you hurry up???"
"Shut up!   He's trying as hard as he can!"
"You don't tell me to shu-"
"We'll make it yet, don't worry!"
The cheers and such inspired the LIttle Engine to keep pushing on.
"I think I can, I think I can..." he murmured.
"Good gott, is he talking to himself?"
"Oh.   Sorry."
But the Little Engine couldn't.
"Sorry guys," he said glumly as they all careened backwards down the mountain and smashed into the train behind them who was coming up and they all tumbled down to the bottom of the lake at the base of the mountain where they layed for the rest of their miserable lives which was actually quite a short period of time.
