Edil and I met when I just turned 15. It was a Friday afterschool by the side of the church under the narra tree. There they were waiting for some pupils they were picking up from school. He was with a friend who happened to be going out with a friend of mine. Harry was his friend he was with and I tagged along with Edilyn, Harry's girlfriend then with Lisa and Janice, I think. I am not to sure how many of us were there. Edil was sitting at the front seat of the jeepney. I could only see his face through the rear view mirror. I still can remember those smiles and his charming face. Actually, he was kind of rude of him because he didn't even got off the jeepney to shake our hands or anything. Maybe back then he was shy. Honestly, I was kind of shy too. Because it was the weekend of my birthday, we invited them to come along with us to the beach (in Sevilla, Sta. Cruz) where we were going to have a picnic with the gang (Jancel Friends.) That was my first encounter with Edil. Oh, I know while I were looking at him, Lisa and I were whispering to each other that he looks very charming.
The following day, the gang and I all went to our picnic to celebrate my birthday. We didn't go for swimming but we spent all day just talking stories, teasing each other about our crushes in school and the guys we love, LOL! I don't think Edil and I even had the chance to talk to each with just the two of us, not that I can remember. The only thing that made me pretty upset was when Manny (Edil and Harry's friend) dropped the bowl of macaroni salad I freshly made. I think he and Edil were sitting on a two sitter bench and Edil stood up right away and Manny went off balance and dropped the macaroni salad he was holding on his hands. I guess it was an accident but still I was upset about it. But hey, I got over it. That was my second encounter with Edil.
In school, I found out from Nanette that Edil told her that he is interested in me or I guess like me. I was very surprised then because I know Liza likes him too and usually LIza is the one they like most. It's not that I consider myself ugly or pretty but I was chubby. Lots of my classmates teased me because I am pretty heavy. I kind of like him too because he is charming but back then I was more interested with another guy. I was involved with a guy who was going to college in Baguio City and who was writing to me almost everyweek.
On November 30, 1987, Edil's father died of cardiac arrest. Again, it was Nanette who told us about the bad news. To pay our respect and condolences to Edil, Liza and I went to Bangar and we went to see his father's remain along with Nanette and Edilyn. Everyone was teasing us then because I actually went to his house and see his father's remain. I didn't meet any of his family members but this time he was a bit better because he offered us some soda and crackers. We only stayed a few hours and left.
The next time I saw him was in school after our Christmas party and beginning of our Christmas vacation. The group went to Parawir, La Union to the beach and spent some time together before our two week vacation. I didn't expect that Edil and company will be going with us. I didn't like the situation at all because I invited another guy who was vacationing from Hawaii. The ride to the beach, at the beach and going home, Edil and I didn't talk to each other at all. We were just staring and smiling at each other. Because I was seated by the driver's side of the jeepney, I could only see his face through the rear view mirror. Again, he was giving me that big smile.
The last time I saw him again was March of 1998 in school during our awards rite. I was on stage right next to Janice, waiting to be called down to get my ribbon. Janice was the one who saw them on the audience. He was with Manny. I saw him with that big smile again. It was getting dark that night and there was a lot of people in the audience and I don't know how Janice even noticed them. Anyway, that was the end of it. I thought he and I will never see each other again. The summer of 1988, I spent most of my time staying in Manila because I was busy processing my paper for my US visa to be finally with my parents.
