DEATH
(PART I)
Story by Daisy
You begin to die the day you were born…some just die sooner than others.
Chapter Four
“Kristin,” Kevin stared affectionately at the face of his wife. “You look beautiful.” He breathed. Kristin’s uptight features softened at his words. He offered her his elbow and led her to their table, pulling her chair out for her when they got there.
“Can I get you anything to drink?” The waiter asked. Kevin and Kristin both ordered a Strawberry Daiquiri.
“So, explain.” Kristin said softly, taking a sip of her Strawberry Daiquiri.
Kevin took a sip of his own drink, took a deep breath, and began the explanation that he had practiced in the car on the way over here.
“Kristin,” He reached out for her hand and placed his lightly on top of hers. “You know that I love you.” She looked away from him. “I wouldn’t have married to you if I didn’t have these overwhelming feelings of absolute love for you. You have to know how much I love you.” He bent his face down and towards her, seeking out her eyes. She looked him in the eye.
“I do.” She whispered, her eyes filling with tears. “But if you loved me so much, how could you have committed the ultimate sin and hurt me in that way?” She took her hand from underneath hers and placed both in her lap.
“Are you ready to order or do you need a few more minutes?” The waiter asked them.
“I think we’re ready.” Kevin answered, thankful for the interruption. They ordered and then sat in a few minutes of silence. Kristin’s last question still floated luminously in the air above them, waiting to come crashing down.
“Kristin, I’ve already broken all of my ties to…to Sarah.” She looked away, a tear falling as she did.
“You’ll always be the father of her child. That’s a tie to her isn’t it?” Kristin looked back at him, tears streaming down her face. Kevin’s stomach tightened at seeing how much he was hurting her.
“Yes, but it never has to know me.” Kevin shook his head. “She’s threatening to tell the press.” Kristin’s eyes widened for a moment, but she quickly regained her composure.
“I have no reason to feel sorry for you.” Her eyes were cold, but there were still tears flowing from them.
“You’re right. You’re right.” Kevin closed his eyes and hung his head for a moment, knowing that he had said the wrong thing. “Kristin,” he looked at her again. “I’m sorry.”
His voice was full of remorse. Kristin looked at him, her eyes telling him that she was ready to forgive him. His heart rose with hope and he longed to kiss his wife again. Her eyes told him how much she loved him, how she forgave him, how she knew that he really didn’t mean to do it. But her mouth told him something different.
“No.” She choked out. It was difficult for her to push her husband away when she loved him so much. “I can’t…I just can’t go on living with you until I’m positive that you’ve broken all connections with her. I’m sorry.” She whispered the last words.
“But Kristin!” Kevin was frantic now. He needed her with him. “I told you! I did break all connections with her!”
“Not if you still have to tell her
not to tell the press. That means you still have to talk to her. And I don’t
want that.” She stood up from the table, gathering her purse. “I’m
sorry.” She mouthed before walking away.
