DEATH (PART I)

You begin to die the day you were born…some just die sooner than others.

Chapter Three

“I’ve never had so many problems!” Kevin yelled, frustrated, to AJ the next day at rehearsal.

“Now that’s what I call ‘girl problems’!” AJ smiled, but quickly wiped it off his face after Kevin threw a menacing glance in his direction.

“What am I supposed to do?” Kevin sat down roughly in a chair.

“Hope that Sarah doesn’t threaten to tell the press.” AJ said matter-of-factly. Kevin sat upright, his eyes wide.

“You think she would?” He asked. AJ shrugged.

“I don’t know. Just don’t give her the idea.” AJ took a sip of water from the bottle he was holding.

“What am I supposed to do about Kristin? She wouldn’t even let me back in the house last night.”

“Beg for forgiveness. Pamper her. Tell her how much you love her. Tell her that you’re sorry and things are over between you and Sarah. I don’t know man, I’ve never been in a situation like this before. I told you from the beginning that Sarah would be trouble.” AJ walked over and gently clapped Kevin on the back. “I hope things get better between you and Kristin.”

          “Me too.” Kevin whispered.

“Kristin, you’ve got to let me explain. Please.” Kevin begged into the phone later that night. He rubbed his eyes with his palm.

“Kevin, I don’t really want to hear it right now.” Kristin’s voice was shaky with the tears that fell from her eyes like a river.

“Will you come out to eat dinner with me tomorrow night?” Kevin’s whole body tensed with anticipation of her answer. There was a long pause.

“Okay,” Kristin finally said, then hung up the phone without saying anything else. Kevin hung up his phone and sent a thankful prayer up to heaven.

He was lying in bed in a hotel that night, thinking about what he would say when he talked to Kristin the next night when the telephone rang.

          “Hello?” He answered.

“Kev, I need to talk to you.” Sarah’s voice came clearly over the line, holding no emotion.

          “Sarah.”

“Meet me in the park in fifteen minutes.”

“Sarah, it’s after midnight!” Kevin sat straight up in the bed now.

          “Well then, you’ll be sorry.”

“Wait!” Kevin listened to the silence and when he heard her breathing, continued. “What do you mean I’ll be sorry?”

“Meet me in the park, Kevin.” Her voice was gentler now. “No matter what happens, I still love you.”

Kevin listened, speechless, to the click of her phone. He hung up his own phone and stepped out of the bed, pulling on a pair of wind pants. He grabbed a t-shirt and left the hotel and walked into the crisp air of the night.

Why would he be leaving the hotel this late at night? Ebony asked herself. She had positioned herself in between two cars in the parking lot and was just about to make her way up to Kevin’s room to fulfill her dream of revenge. It’s past midnight! Where is he going? Ebony jumped up from her spot and walked quickly and silently behind Kevin.

Kevin heard the slight sound of footsteps behind him. He quickened his pace and hunched over against the wind of the late night air. As soon as he had made his way out of the parking lot and into the wooded area of the park, he whipped around to face his follower. There was no one.

Shit! That was close! Ebony peeked around the car that she had jumped behind just as Kevin had turned around. Why did you have to be such a paranoid little…? She jogged quietly to the park, angling herself so that she wasn’t directly behind Kevin. She watched him walk over to a petite woman standing beside the play set. He put a hand on her shoulder and turned her around. Ebony squatted behind a bench and peered through the slits.

“Kevin.” Sarah wrapped her arms around his waist and hugged him tightly, knowing that what she was going to say next would tear them apart. She tilted her chin up and kissed his perfect mouth, savoring the taste of their last kiss.

“Sarah, why did you want me to meet you here?” Kevin rested his hands on her hips. Sarah looked down and played nervously with her hands.

“Kevin, I was talking to my lawyer the other day…” Kevin dropped his hands and took a step back from her. Any sentence that started out like that would not be good.

“What?” Kevin asked, prompting her to tell him more.

This is gonna be good! Ebony thought, listening closely.

“I was talking to him about us…about the baby…our baby.” As she said those words, Kevin gave a visible wince. She stepped closer to him, but he moved back.

          “Where’s all this going, Sarah?”

“He told me how much money I could make if I sold this story to the press.” She said quietly. So quietly that Ebony almost didn’t hear it.

“What story?” Kevin asked harshly, pretending that he didn’t know what she was talking about.

“Our story. Of our love, our affair…our baby.” Kevin flinched again.

“Why would you want to do that to me?” Kevin asked loudly. He stepped forward forebodingly. “Why would you do that to the group? That would ruin not only me, but all of us! You can’t do this Sarah!”

“Kevin, you know I don’t have much money!” She stepped away from him and he stepped forward again, intimidating her. “I don’t have any money to tell you the truth! By selling this story, I’ll be getting more money than I make in five years!”

A stony silence filled the air. Kevin glared hard into Sarah’s eyes. Her eyes begged forgiveness from him. Ebony watched the two former lovers eagerly. She loved every hate-filled moment that passed. Maybe I won’t even have to kill him! She thought eagerly. Maybe he’ll kill himself if it gets bad enough! She shook her head. No, she would get her revenge that she promised her brother. And this soap-opera-like dilemma that Kevin faced only heightened her crazy feelings of hate.
