Death is a shadow that veils you like a peaceful sleep...or a nightmare.

Chapter Three

“Come on, Bri. Let’s go get a few drinks.” Nick said, opening the door for Brian who had been sitting lifelessly in the car. Nick grabbed Brian by his elbow and led him into the bar. He helped him onto a stool and ordered them drinks.

“Come on, Brian. Put on a smile, even if it is a fake one. You look so sullen.” Nick said, elbowing Brian in the ribs playfully. Brian plastered on a smile momentarily, then placed his head in his crossed arms.

He and Nick sat silently for a few minutes. Brian’s mind was churning with horrifying thoughts. Kevin…Howie…both brutally murdered. And I loved them both so much. Their faces swirled in his mind’s eye, the many moments that they shared together flashing quickly. They’re gone…never coming back. All because someone killed them. And for what?

“Argh!” Brian screamed, frustrated at his inability to comprehend why someone would do this to his two beloved friends.

“Whoa, man. You alright?” Nick asked, concerned. Brian looked around him, suddenly aware that everyone in the bar was staring at him. Brian smiled meekly.

“Yeah, I’m okay. Just thinking.” Nick nodded, showing that he understood. They both took a long sip of their drink.

“Well,” Nick said, setting down his glass with a thud. “Wanna play a game of darts?” Brian nodded and followed Nick to the back of the bar. Nick grabbed the glass that held the darts and handed them to Brian. “You first.”

Brian took his spot in front of the dartboard and began to throw the darts, barely aiming. To his surprise, he did considerably well since he wasn’t even trying. He went to the board and retrieved the darts, handing them to Nick.

Nick threw them one by one, analyzing every throw. Before he threw each dart, he would glance over his shoulder at Brian and make a funny face, trying to cheer him up. After a while, Brian temporarily forgot about his troubles.

“Come on, Frack, you’re taking forever!” Brian’s spirits were up now and he was actually laughing. Nick suddenly looked over his shoulder at Brian, a crazy grin on his face.

Nick’s image flashed before Brian’s eyes, quickly changing. Now it was no longer a dart that Nick held loosely in his hand but a blood-stained knife, angled threateningly. Nick’s eyes were glaring into Brian’s and his face contorted in hate.

“Brian,” Nick muttered in an evil tone.

“Brian!” Nick was grabbing Brian’s shoulders and shaking him. “Why are you looking at me like that?” Brian blinked hard and shook his head. Nick was normal. It had just been a figure of his imagination. But it had looked so real.

“Nick,” Brian whispered. What if it was Nick? Brian scrambled out of Nick’s grasp and backed slowly away from him. He hit a chair. He turned quickly on his heel and ran blindly out of the bar, leaving a bewildered Nick standing alone at the dartboard.

“Thank you,” Ebony said, nodding to the man. She turned slowly and headed for the direction that the man had said that he had seen Brian going. She had only gone a few feet when she saw Brian racing blindly out of a bar. “So, that’s where you are.”

A wicked smile played on her lips and she quickened her pace. She kept her eyes glued on Brian. Suddenly, she realized that he was heading straight for her. She began to slow, not breaking her gaze.

“Where is he going?” She asked herself. “Does he see me?” Her eyes grew wide as Brian’s eyes suddenly met hers, just before he crashed into her.

“Sorry! Sorry!” Brian yelled, not stopping. He turned and began a full-on sprint. Where is he going now? Ebony wondered, making her way to her car and jumping in. She immediately started the car and shifted into drive. But when she looked up, she was shocked.

          Brian was gone.
