Affairs
of Death (PART III of Death)
Story by Daisy
Death is a shadow that veils you like a peaceful sleep...or a nightmare.
Chapter Four
Brian slammed the door to the basement, locking it behind him even though
Leighanne wasn’t home. He raced down the stairs and headed for his desk.
Wasting no time, Brian grabbed a pad of paper and a pen and began scribbling
down all of the facts that he knew of Kevin’s murder. The time, the place, how
it happened, when he was found, who found him…things of the like.
He began analyzing Kevin’s death from every angle. Then, on a separate
piece of paper, he wrote down every detail that he knew about Howie’s death.
On yet another piece of paper, he wrote down where all of the guys were when
Kevin and Howie were being murdered.
We were all around practicing while Kevin was murdered. Brian
thought. Or were we? AJ left for a quick bathroom break minutes before Howie
left to go to an appointment. Brian’s skin crawled as he imagined AJ
pushing a knife through Kevin’s heart. But in that short amount of time,
did AJ have enough time to run all the way to the underground parking lot and
kill Kevin and make it back in time within five minutes?
Brian’s head swam with questions, doubts, fears. Could it have possibly
been AJ? AJ never has been too fond of Kevin, Brian noted. But he
wouldn’t kill him would he? Only one way to find out.
Brian racked his brain for AJ’s whereabouts during Howie’s murder. AJ
had said something about going out to breakfast. And none of the other guys
could back him up since none of them went with him. So, AJ has two faulty
alibis. Brian ran a sweaty hand through his hair, not wanting to believe
that AJ was the real murderer.
Well, let’s see if his “bathroom” story checks out, Brian
thought, grabbing his keys and making his way back up the basement stairs.

“Well.” Brian whispered into the dark stadium. He stood shivering in
the cold in the spot where they had been practicing the day that Kevin died.
Brian set his watch for five minutes and inhaled deeply. He was going to see if
AJ could have made it all the way from the stadium to the parking lot, killed
Kevin, and made it back in time.
“Ready…set…go.” Brian walked casually through the stadium, just
as AJ had done. As soon as he stepped through the double doors, he fell into a
dead sprint, heading for the underground parking lot. By the time Brian made his
way to the parking space where Kevin had been killed, three and a half minutes
had passed and Brian was panting heavily. He shook his head. There’s no way AJ
could have done it.
Brian caught his breath as he headed for his car. Back to square one,
he thought, shaking his head. He was getting nowhere. Brian started up his car
and headed home, set on working in his basement until he could find out just who
killed his cousin and his best friend.
