Break-up Games

~~*Chapter Six*~~

After the party, Nick took me back to the house. “Ashley, wait.” I caught the car door before it shut and bent down so I could see Nick’s face. “Can we talk about this whole Brian thing?” I sighed, then nodded, watching as Nick parked the car in the driveway and got out. I led him to the backyard where we sat down on the porch swing.

I moved my feet over the ground, causing us to swing gently. We sat in silence for a few minutes. Nick finally broke the silence.

“Ashley, I…I don’t want to lie to you, but I think you’re insane.” I stared down at my hands which were folded in my lap. “Brian and Chelsea have been together just about since they started to walk. There’s no way that he’s gonna leave her for you. It’s just not logical.”

I turned and faced him. “You don’t understand, Nick. We’re in love. He told me that he loved me. And I love him.” I searched Nick’s eyes for any sign of understanding. Finding none, I said, “You wouldn’t know since you’ve never been in love.”

“Believe me, I’ve been in love before.” When he said the words, his eyes were penetrating into mine, causing my heart to beat faster. What was wrong with me? I loved Brian. This was all too much for my heart to carry.

“When we show him how good of a couple we are, he’ll be so jealous he won’t be able to stand it. He’ll realize that he still loves me, and he’ll want me back. I know it.” I stared into the full moon and imagined us together.

“Ashley, I don’t want to pretend to be your boyfriend.” I jerked my head back to him. “Brian’s been so happy with Chelsea that I don’t want to have any part of their breakup. She’s the best thing that ever happened to him, Ashley, and you can’t take that away from him.”

“But don’t you understand? He’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me! I have to have him back. I have to.” Nick looked away from me, a hint of disgust in his eyes. “Nick. Please. I need you.” My tone was gentle and pleading. He leaned his elbows on his knees and thought for what seemed like an eternity.

“Okay.” He turned back to me. “I’ll do it.”

“Oh thank you!” I threw my arms around his neck and hugged him happily. “You’re the best.” I said, looking him in the eyes. I gave him a friendly kiss on the cheek, then walked inside, waving goodnight to him before shutting the door.

As I laid in bed later that night, I dreamt of the moment when Brian would realize that he still loved me and would take me by the hand and kiss me. I smiled into the darkness and fell asleep with the vision imprinted in my mind.

“Nick, Chelsea just invited us to go out to dinner with her and Brian tonight at La Madeline!” I said excitedly into the receiver, rifling through my closet.

“La Madeline? I don’t think so! You know how much that restaurant costs?”

“I know,” I said, holding up my little black dress to my body. I smiled at the reflection in the full-length mirror. “It is really expensive, but this is our chance to really make him sit up and pay attention. Nick, if you play the role of a devoted boyfriend tonight, I’ll pay for my own dinner. That way, you get a great meal, plus a wonderful night with a beautiful brunette.”

          “But Chelsea’s blond.”

“I was talking about me, dumb ass!” I laughed at his remark. Nothing could pull me out of my great mood. Even a little teasing from a conceited fool such as Nick.

“I know, I was kidding,” I heard him inhale, then exhale slowly. “Alright. I’ll go tonight. What time?”

“Seven-thirty. Pick me up at seven.”

“See you then, lover.” He said, hanging up the phone. I shook my head, clicked off the phone and threw it on the bed.

I spent the next two hours getting ready. I decided to let my long brown hair down tonight. I curled it, then pulled half of it into a clip at the crown of my head. I pulled down a few strands, recurling them into ringlets that caressed each side of my face. I made my makeup light, but still noticeable. I made sure to make my eyelashes long, but not clumpy. Guys love that. I slipped into my little black dress. It was sleeveless, accentuating my slim arms and neckline. It made sure to wear my “up-a-cup” bra. My cleavage was perfect; enough to notice, but not so much that is was overwhelming. I slipped my just-toe-polished feet into some strappy sandals that were comfy, yet formal.

The doorbell rang at exactly seven o’clock. I grabbed my purse and headed for the door. I opened it, revealing a nicely polished Nick Carter.

“Wow,” Nick breathed when he saw me. Hearing that made my cheeks blush. But it was just what I wanted to hear. I knew I looked good and that would definitely make Brian’s head turn my way.

“You certainly clean up well, Mr. Carter.” My voice was shy and quiet. If I wasn’t so determined on getting Brian back, I might have noticed that he was definitely a guy to consider dating. I shook the thought from my head.

“Shall we leave, Miss Jennings?” Nick held out his arm to me and I took it, closing the door behind me.
