Break-up Games

~~*Chapter Seven*~~
“Welcome to La Madeline. Do you have reservations for this evening, sir?” The host asked Nick, who’s arm I still had.
“Yes sir, we do.”
“The name?”
“Littrell.” Nick replied.
“Right this way, sir.” We followed the host to our table.
“Lay on the sap thick, okay? We’ve got to make him think that we’re really a serious couple.” I whispered into Nick’s ear, just before we got to the table.
“Relax, Ashley. I’ve got you covered.” The host left after we got to the table.
“Oh, Ashley! You look beautiful!” Chelsea squealed, jumping up and giving me a hug.
“You do too!” I felt a stab of guilt as I realized that I was about to break up her relationship. And then I realized why I was doing it. “Brian.”
The look on his face told me that he had no idea that Nick and I were supposed to be sharing dinner with him. I gave him a quick, friendly hug and then sat down next to Nick.
“So, Ashley, I love your dress! Where’d you get it?” Chelsea and I began a friendly conversation. I was in the middle of saying, “It’s so hard to find the right clothes these days,” when I felt Nick’s hand slowly sliding across my leg. My mouth opened, but I caught myself before I let out the squeal that was threatening my throat. I held up a finger at Chelsea and smiled, then turned to Nick. “What the hell are you doing?” I asked through a teeth-clenched smile.
He leaned over, his mouth so close to my ear that his breath tickled. “You said lay on the sap thick, right? That’s what I’m doing.” He leaned his forehead against mine and a chill swept through my body. What’s wrong with me? “From where he’s sitting, he can see where my hands are at.” Because my lips were slightly open, I could feel his warm, sweet breath inside my mouth and I began to feel dizzy. It was then that I felt his other hand running up my back. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Brian fuming- his eyes were bulged, his face was red, and his ears were beginning to turn purple. I smiled, turned back to Nick and placed my hand on his chest. “Let the games begin.”
I turned back to Chelsea who was watching us like a movie, giddy that we were so happy together. If she only knew, I thought, smiling at her. “Will you excuse me? I need to use the ladies room.” I got up, noticing that Nick had risen with me. I gave him a short smile and then headed to the ladies room at the back of the restaurant.
“Ashley.” The sound of Brian’s voice made my small arm hairs stand up at end and goosebumbs flooded over my entire body. I turned, giving him a sexy smile.
“Ashley,” he moved closer to me, pinning me against the wall. My heart raced and I loved the feel of his fingers in my hair. “What are you doing with him? I thought you loved me.” His voice was heartbreaking and for a moment I had forgotten about Nick and Chelsea. But then I remembered.
“And I thought you loved me.” My tone was chilly and I forced myself to ignore his big, soft hands running through my hair. I made myself disregard the fact that his other hand was running slowly across my stomach and making its way to the small of my back. “I already have a wonderful boyfriend and you have an amazing girlfriend. Why ruin that?”
“Because we’re in love with each other!” His voice was shrill and his tone turned whiny. “Ashley, forget about Nick for the moment. Remember how wonderful this summer was? The moonlit walks, the beachside kisses…don’t you remember any of that?”
“Of course I do, who could forget?” I felt myself beginning to weaken by the memories and I forced an even tone. “But until Chelsea is gone, there is no us. There are no more memories. Now if you’ll excuse me Brian, I need to use the ladies room.” I slid out of his arms, wishing I could stay, but knowing I couldn’t. I sauntered into the rest room, swaying my hips slightly. I didn’t look back at him, but I could feel his eyes burning into the back of my head.
“I love you, Ashley.” He whispered, just before I closed the bathroom door.
