It seems like the previous century- oh wait- it WAS the previous Millinia! but earning a dual degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani was certainly worth the effort.
Nucleus Software, New Delhi, India (Jan '90- June '90)
I did my PS-2 (Intership, BITS style) training at Nucleus Software Pvt Ltd - Citibank's software development vendor. I built a file transfer program to transfer files between PoS terminals and the Prime mainframe central computers at their HQ. The high point of the 6-month traineeship was the second last day when they were actually burning the Turbo-C compiled binary onto EPROM chips that were to be loaded into the PoS PCs at the various Citibank accounting centers!
Softek Ltd, New Delhi, India (Aug '90 - July '92)
Although I graduated in 1990, I had a campus placement with Softek, a very prestigious Systems software development house in those days. Softek was the company that built the parallel Fortran compiler for Param- India's first SuperComputer! I joined Softek in August 1990 Softek Ltd spent two years overhauling the memory and display manager for SoftWORD, their flagship commerical wordprocessor product.
USC, Columbia, SC 1992-94
By 1992, wisdom had dawned and methought a Masters from the US would do me further good. I got my share of pizzas while earning my
M.S. in Computer Science with a specialization in Computer Networks and Data Communications from the
University of South Carolina, Columbia,
SC. Before graduating from USC in 1994, I had had a chance to
work as an imaging research
assistant at the Earth Sciences and Resources Institute (ESRI)
and later as an intern at
the Computer Services Division (CSD), both of which (gainfully :-) exposed
me to a handful of cool technology in the process!
My Masters thesis was in the area of Mobile Communications under the guidance of
Dr. Suresh Singh and our research was
published
in the ACM Journal of Wireless Computing. Its titled Loss Profiles: A Quality of Service Measure in Mobile Computing .
Novell, Bangalore, India (Jan '95 - Feb '99)
For the first three years or so at Novell, I worked
in the IntranetWare NFS services product
to build Unix namespace support in Netware file system volumes. This would essentially allow Netware volumes
to behave like UNIX file systems, bi-directionally.
Following which, I shifted my focus to research topics and moved to the Technology Group, started by a long time IBM Research Labs veteran, Dr Sitaram Dinkar. Here I worked in various projects ranging from Internet Security to designing scheduling algorithms for realtime delivery of multimedia traffic over the Internet.
The full gamut of cutting edge technologies.
Amazon.com, Seattle, WA (Apr '99 - Mar '02)

Proof of Intelligent design! - a necessary punctuation in the evolutionary process.. A Startup, of course, hey it was the 2000s!
Decided to take a breather from Amazon, got together with a few friends and co-founded Aventeon.com.
We were in the business of building applications that ran on wireless handheld devices bringing enterprise workflows to
the hands of mobile field workers field workers. Aventeon went on to secure two rounds of Venture funding from Intel Capital, TVM and 3i.
