Mid-Conference excursion

Mamallapuram

Mamallapuram is reached from city of Chennai by the beautiful East Coast Road and is 60 Km from the city. This place was the site of an ancient seaport built by Narasimha Pallava which dates back to 7th century A.D.
Mamallapuram is full of monuments hewn out of solid rock and the most important of these are 1. The Pandava Rathas 2. Shore temple 3. bas-relief of Arjunas Penance 4. Mahihasura mardhini cave and 5. Various mandapams hewn out of rocks. The sea has been making inroads into this area and as a result, to save the shore temple, groin walls have been erected during the last few decades. A short distance from Mamallapuram is Kovalam where marine algae abound on a few clusters of rock and it will be possible to collect specimens from this area.

Kambakkam

Kamabakkam, ( lat. 79 55 Lang. 13 35), a forest covered hill is situated 10 Km away from Varadayaphalem, a village in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, approximately 100 Km away from Chennai on the Chennai to Tirupathi roadway. There is a perennial freshwater stream which hosts a wide range of aquatic flora and fauna. The stream starts from a water fall which is situated deep into the forest. Water from the falls rapidly flows down as a hill stream. The bottom of the stream is usually rocky or covered with boulders and stones and sandy bottom occurs rarely at one or two places.
Submerged rocks and boulders are the substrates for many algae which grow attached to them. The notable algae include Rivularia, Chaetophora elegans, Draparnaldiopsis krishnamurthyi, Spirogyra sp., Temnogametum, desmids, Batrachospermum sp., etc.

Pulicat Lake

Pulicat lake is the largest stretch of backwater in the east coast of Tamilnadu, about 60 Km North of Chennai. It lies mainly in the state of Andhra Pradesh with a little portion in Tamilnadu 13 24 and 13 47 N latitude and 3 to 11 miles broad with a total area of about 178 square miles. Its drainage area is about 1700 square miles. In the middle of he upper part of the lake there are three islands, namely, Sriharikota, Venadu and Irakam. The lake is connected with the Bay of Bengal through a deep opening, about half a mile broad and situated a mile north of Pulicat light house. The lake is subjected to limited tidal influence, the average difference between the high and low tide being one foot. The deepest portion is between Karimanal kuppam and Pulicat, with a water column of 18 to 30 feet. Several algae such as species of Enteromorpha, Chaetomorpha, Cladophora, Acetabularia, Hypnea, Gracilaria, Polysiphonia are collected from this lake besides a number of planktonic algae and sea grasses.
