Life-time Achievement Award in Phycology

Prof.V.S.Sundaralingam


Prof. Vellore Somasundaram Sundaralingam is the senior most Algologist in this Country, having started his research career as early as 1940 at the famed University Botany Laboratory, Chepauk, Madras, under the guidance of Prof.M.O.P. Iyengar, acclaimed as the Father of Algology.

He was born at Thiruchengode on 28th September 1918 to Sri. V. Somasundaram and Srimati Nagaratnammal. After graduating from Presidency College, Madras in 1938, he joined the MadrasUniversity Botany Laboratory. He took his M.Sc. Degree (by research) in 1944. He then joined Pachaiyappa’s College, Madras in1945 as a Lecturer
in Botany and rose to the Position of Professor and Head of the Department in 1951, which position he held until 1977. He was also Vice-Principal from 1966-1977, which position he adorned with dignity. He was an officer
of the I Madras (Tamilnadu) Battalion.

In 1977, he was appointed as a Professor in the Centre of Advanced Study in Botany

While he was teaching in Pachiyappa’s College he continued his researches on the Indian Charophyceae which culminated in his obtaining the PhD degree of Madras University in 1961.

He was an exemplary teacher, strict disciplinarian and an able administrator. At the same time he was popular with his students.

Prof.Sundaralingam has authored two books and published several research papers on Charophyceae. He co-authored the ICAR Monograph on Charophyceae. He also motivated several of his junior staff in algal research and two of them obtained the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Prof. Sundaralingam is above all a humanist and has happy, good relations with everyone with whom he came into contact and his humility is remarkable endowed as he is with so much merit.

Krishnamurthy Institute is proud to honour this excellent person with a humble tribute, in token thereof, we present him with a silver medal, as a small measure of our appreciation and affection and request him to graciously accept them
