Germanic Heathenry

Heathenry, simply put, is a small, widespread Germanic Religious community known by various names(Odinism, Asatru, Irminen, Theodish, etc). We are pantheistic in our view of the Gods and Goddesses. We have no sacred texts; as in we have no Bible, Koran, Talmud/Torah; but do have texts to use as guidelines. The Havamal is one of those texts and can be found in the Poetic Eddas. Before getting into my vision of and for Heathenry, it needs to be mentioned that there are many differing views and organizations of all stripes within my religion. Some support my view, others abhor it...make your own decision.

My vision:

Community

It has long been my view that for Heathenry to function properly it needs real, true community. This means local action within your area. Whether getting people already in Germanic Heathenry to move to your area or getting new people interested in Odinism/Asatru/etc doesnt matter in the beginning. Creating a viable local community is what matters. Creating a solid local base for Asatru needs to occur in order for us to both grow and function naturally.

There has been much adieu over the years about returning to the tribe. Tribal Asatru is something that new people will run into, some reading this may be tribalists. While I do support re-building of the tribal system, they seem to lack one thing that is essential to a tribe: community. In order to rebuild the tribes one needs to create a viable community to work from. One, or even two, kindreds or hearths (a glossary of terms will be provided below) do not and, generally, cannot be a tribe. Asatru currently lacks the community needed for that tribal push. It takes more than meeting once or twice a month for a gathering to be a community. In the end, if you dont have anything in your area, make something happen. Put out flyers and information, hit the local libraries, book stores, grocery stores, etc...hell, even the local laundromat. Be active in your community!

Fitness

An emphasis on fitness is definately desired. The goal being actual physical strength of the folk while complimenting the natural beauty of our people. Strength and beauty going hand in hand as it once did before, returning us to the natural order of things.

Although, with that strength, an additional emphasis needs to be on both mental and spiritual needs as well. Only through the combination can we achieve the desired results. Physical exercise brings greater strength as well as cleansing body, mind and soul.

Some links for you:

-a cool site that might be "controversial" to some heathens, a lot of interesting content. Done by a local Asatruar that I first met with ten years ago or so.

-an excellent webpage with lots of good info!

Asatru Folk Assembly

World Tree Publications

Lakota Declaration of War-an interesting document. This was a Native American response to "whites" (European-Americans) attempting to suck up and use their spiritual traditions and practices.
