Lava Flows and Cinder Cones - Dusty brown cinder cones poke up out of the jet black lava flows on the relatively barren 6000ft high plateau between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Even the ribbon of so-called "blacktop" asphalt roadway seems grey in comparison to the lava rock.
