Richard Percy Memorial Fund

The Richard N. Percy Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1997 by Deborah Johnston, Richard Percy Jr. and Lee Percy in memory of their father Richard N. Percy, superintendent of the Kalamazoo Public Schools from 1960 to 1969.  The Richard N. Percy Fund is designed to support professional development not otherwise funded by the district for teachers and administrators in the Kalamazoo Public Schools.  Applicants are encouraged to think creatively about possibilities for expanding their talents and unique aptitudes in ways that will benefit and enrich both their students and themselves.

 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

            Applicants for the Richard N. Percy Memorial Fund must be teachers or administrators in the Kalamazoo Public Schools.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

            Applicants must demonstrate that the professional development is related in some way to their position or desired future position with the Kalamazoo Public Schools.

            The professional development must be of the highest professional quality.  Funding may be used for registration, lessons, other fees, materials, transportation, lodging, living expenses, and/or childcare.

 

APPLICATION PROCESS

Proposals are limited to a maximum of three standard-sized typed pages and the attached cover sheet.  Applicants should address the following areas:

 

a)      A brief description of the proposed professional development opportunity, including information about the conference, workshop, and/or seminar, presenter(s) and professional organization sponsoring the event.

b)      A statement of the professional and personal need and relevance this project addresses for both students and the applicant.

c)      A statement of the desired professional and personal outcomes.

d)      Possible plans to share information and plans to evaluate the worth of the project.

e)      An itemized budget detailing how funds will be used, indicating additional funding sources if needed.

 

TIMELINE

Recipients may utilize KPEF/Richard N. Percy Memorial Fund awards to attend staff development programs held throughout the year.  Information about the fund will be disseminated to all school buildings and administrative offices in early May.  Grant proposals must be returned to the KPEF office by April 30th.  The award recipient will be announced before the end of the school year.

 

The fund�s advisory committee consisting of the family of Richard N. Percy will make final recommendations for the award.

 

AMOUNT OF AWARD

            Each year a nonrenewable award of up to $500 will be given to the outstanding applicant.
