Nicknames: Light Boy (Patamon, Dub) Image Song: In the Blue In-Depth: Viewers first impression of Minamoto Kouji is commonly described as the "lone wolf" of the series. He is the most introverted person among the Chosen Children. As the series progressed, he finally warmed to everyone, especially at the instance he found out he had a sibling. Initially, he wanted nothing to do with Takuya and the gang, merely brushing them off and wandering around the Digital World on his own. People would question why he would want to go to the Digital World in the first place. It was not until Ophanimon mentioned "unanswered questions of his past" via D-scanner to him that be became interested in seeing this new "digital world." Kouji does not make friends easily and it is not something that seems to bother him as much as the other chosen children. He could care less about his cold and uncaring demeanor towards things and seems to care more about getting straight to the point of things. Kouji's father’s job causes him to move around frequently. In turn, he didn't make very many friends or develop any social skills. From this, he learned how to be independent and become a good strategist. He has a bit of knowledge of fencing, as demonstrated in Episode 2 (he single-handedly took down an entire group of Pagumon using a pole), and knows how to fight and defend himself well when the time comes. Kouji owns a brown dog and apparently owns a blue guitar (although whether or not he plays is unknown). He arrived on his own to the Digital World and he purposely remained alone for quite sometime, withdrawing himself from the Chosen Children. From time to time, he'd run into them but chose not converse with them, even after kind gestures to join up. He didn't become a team player until past episode 12. Typically, he runs off to do tasks without telling people first. He has a passion for helping others, and saving his friends or other digimon when they are in danger, especially shown with Gotsumon. He commonly argues with Takuya and apparently has a fear of receiving affection. He is very serious about doing what needs to be done as Takuya stated. Kouji seems to have a clear sense about how much people's lives are at stake as opposed to Takuya, who is happy-go-lucky about the entire situation. Eventually Kouji warms up to everyone around him and realizes he can't be on his own. Since Kouji lacks the proper skills to interact with these newfound friends of his, he acts awkwardly and sometimes replies in an indifferent or unintentionally hostile manner. He hates a number of things, including being touched by others and he barely puts his trust in anyone. He didn't get along with everyone at first and thought some of them were plain out stupid or unhelpful. In time, he eventually accepted them as his first real friends that looked out for his well-being. Afterwards, he met Duskmon and remained focused on him. When he learned he had a real biological (and very much alive) mother and to top it off, a twin brother, he was extremely shocked and had a hard time adjusting to it. He had to ask help for the first time from the Chosen Children on how to act like a brother. As the show progressed, Kouji and Kouichi developed a brotherly bond. Unfortunately he is a bad cook (for example, making hamburgers composed of fruit and squid), and he has a tendency to fall off things. Kouji is most commonly related to Ishida Yamato (Matt Ishida) from Digimon Adventure mostly due to his attitude. Kouji is in a way like Yamato, such as the huge concern with his brother, owning a guitar, and fighting with the main goggle-head leader. However, Kouji chooses to be by himself and wanted to be alone as opposed to Yamato, who was more open and wanted the presence of people around him. Aside from that, Kouji gets irritated very easily but remains calm in situations. In the dub, there are a few minor changes to his personality. He seems a bit more harsh and severely lacked social abilities. He seemed like he viewed Tommy as a hindrance because he was a child and that not everyone was be up to his standards of independence. He also made a lot more insults to J.P., but talked more to Zoë in the dub than he did in the Japanese version. His relationship with Takuya was the same in terms of fighting. Other Facts: Minamoto means "shine source" and is the name of a famous samurai clan in the mid 12th century Kamakura Period of Japan. Minamoto was also considered an honorary surname during that time period. The Minamoto Clan fought the Taira clan in 1185 and Minamoto emerged as the victors. They sought imperial authority over Japan. They established a shogun (military governor) and made their government near present-day Kyoto. Over the next four centuries, the Minamoto Clan ruled politically in Japan. Kouji’s hair greatly resembles a samurai. This piece of history of the Minamoto clan could possibly explain how Kouji is familiar with fighting. (Source) | ||||||
