FOUR HELMETS OF STEEL

Estonian soldiers in the whirlwinds of WWII

BRETHREN OF THE FOREST 1941

This page will describe activities of the Estonian guerilla forces in 1941. They were formed from men who had gone into hiding during the Soviet occupation. When the Germans advanced into Estonia in the summer of 1941, the guerilla forces emerged from the forests and started harassing the retreating Soviet forces. Many locations, including the university town Tarto in the south-eastern Estonia, were liberated by Estonian forces and the advancing German forces were welcomed as allies who had provided the Estonian indigenous forces a chance to drive away the occypier. Very soon, however, it became clear that the new occupier was exactly that; the Germans disarmed the guerillas and were not willing to recognize Estonian sovereignity.
