| Government Kosrae is governed by an Executive Branch, headed by Governor Rensley Sigrah; a unicameral Legislature led by Speaker Hiteo S. Shrew; and a Judicial Branch under Chief Justice Yosiwo George. Under the Constitution, all matters not specifically reserved to the Executive or the Judiciary are subject to Legislative authority. The Seventh Kosrae State Legislature was seated on January 9, 1999 for a four-year term. The link above has more detailed biographical information about the individual Senators. Current members of the Legislature are: Lelu Tafunsak Reedson P. Shrew How a Bill Becomes a Law Bills are introduced in the Legislature and assigned to committees for review. Committee assignments are determined by the subject matter of the proposed legislation. The Legislature has five Standing Committees: Ways and Means; Judiciary and Governmental Operations; Resources and Development; Health and Social Affairs; and Education and Cultural Affairs. When a bill is reported out of committee, it must pass two readings on separate days, with at least 10 votes in favor of passage on second reading. Upon final passage, the bill is transmitted to the Governor. A bill becomes law when the Governor signs it, or 30 days after transmission to the Governor if the Governor neither signs nor vetoes the bill. A veto may be overridden by a 4/5 vote of the Legislature. A Note About this Page This page was developed and is maintained by Legislative staff on a free server at no cost to the people of Kosrae. Because we are using a free server, we must accept the advertising pop-up window that appears in the corner of your screen. We apologize for the inconvenience but believe that the benefits of the free space outweigh the inconvenience. By using this service, the Legislature does not intend to endorse any advertiser that may appear in the window. |
