KORG Past Events: Dark Visions
This event was another of KORG's attempt to take the path less travelled. The
characters in this event were all undead - a ghost, a mummy, a revenant, a
skeletal warrior, a death knight, and a barrow wight. Each had reason to
hate an evil warlord named Tomar Zepar. Tomar was a mysterious fellow who
had ruled an ever-expanding empire for many centuries. Exactly what he
was (demon, liche, demi-god) no one knew. What was apparent was that most of
the valley that the player
characters were sworn to protect was about to be invaded by Tomar's
legions. After hunting down some advance scouts the party had to invade
Tomar's keep to try and kill him. This seemed to be the only way to stop
his planned attack - as anyone who plays in KORG events knows, of course,
appearences can be deceiving...
The Characters
Making the characters for this was tricky. We wanted to make them all
be different kinds of undead, but at the same time we needed them to be
roughly equal in power. We ended up having to give various characters
powers different than the usual type of undead, or taking away powers
that that type of undead would normally have. Overall the characters were
fairly well
balanced - considering the amount of combat in this adventure that
was a requirement. One neat thing - since the party was all undead they
could take all kinds of abuse and regenerate most of it. This gave us
freedom to do crazy things like dish out 120 points of damage in a single
shot.
- Kharis: A greater mummy, Kharis was part of an ancient
race that once lived in the valley that is home to all the party members.
He has used his powers (including many clerical spells) to defend the valley
for centuries. It is Kharis that organized the other undead to move against
Tomar Zepar.
- Anna Leigh Heybrook: The ghost of a long dead woman who died
in a fire caused by bandits. Anna's descendants live in the valley, and she
watches over and defends them. Normally invisible and intangible, she can
move objects through telekenisis and appear to humans (although when angered
she seems to burst into flames, something that can shock and alarm the
living).
- Lady Catherine of Tagore's Doom: Formerly a paladin, Lady
Catherine betrayed her people when blackmailed by Tomar, who had captured
her husband and son. Afte her betrayal Tomar returned her son to her - as
a vampire. Enraged, Lady Catherine slew her son and attacked Tomar's
citadel. She was killed, and raised as a death knight to serve him. Although
she escaped his service two hundred years ago Lady Catherine still burns
with hatred for the mysterious warlord. Since death knights are so darned
powerful we stripped her of several powers, including the 20 die Fireball
(in the game this was justified as Tomar having taken the powers away).
- Nessa Baker: A priestess of Naruff who was killed by bandits.
She returned from the dead as a revenant, with her clerical abilities intact.
Nessa wants revenge on the bandits, and for reasons unknown to her is
likewise filled with a desire to kill Tomar.
- Tal Mac Lir: A warrior buried with his king in the valley
many centuries ago, Tal Mac Lir was awakened when robbers invaded the
resting place of his liege. Tal rose from the dead as a barrow wight and
killed most of the robbers. Two escaped, and he wishes to track them down
and regain what they stole. Furthermore, he wants to punish Tomar Zepar, as
it was his scouts that invaded the tomb.
- Angus McKenzie: A skeleton warrior whose controlling circlet
was taken by one of Tomar's soldiers long ago. Wants to get the circlet back
and use it to end his undead existance. (He has promised not
to do this until after defeating Tomar, however).
Notable Encounters
- King of the Ghouls: One of the first things the party did
was stop a gang of ghouls from poisoning the valley's water supply. Many
parties tried to convince the ghouls that they had been sent by Tomar (hey,
they were undead too). The head ghoul wouldn't buy this. He was wearing a
cheap crown, and would point at it and say "I'm King a da ghouls!" to
back up every point. It was just a throwaway line, but every party seemed
to love it. "I'm King a da ghouls" has become kind of a KORG catch phrase.
- Das Uberknights: A group of NPCs, the Uberknights were a
bunch of adventurers with heavy German accents celebrating a victory in
valley tavern. All the parties wisely avoided fighting the Uberknights,
choosing instead to lure out of the tavern one of Tomar's minions. (Maybe
it's because the Uberknights were bragging about how they killed all those
vampires?)
- The Play: As out of place as it might seem, we continued the
KORG tradition of making parties perform plays in this adventure. In
this case the party needs to get Angus' circlet from its current owner - Sir
Richard Daggereye, actor and playwrite. He and his traveling group of actors
are about to perform in the valley. Tragically, his actors are all sick,
and he needs six replacements to perform his latest play. If the party
agrees, he will give them the circlet. Why, you might ask, does the party
not just rush Sir Richard? They are quite powerful, after all. Because Sir
Richard possesses a Sunsword, which he is using as a prop when the party
meets up with him. All the party members are helpless in sunlight, and thus
can not attack him. Note that one of the party members (Anna) can not actually
touch anything (like her script), and Tal Mac Lir can not read common. We
simulated this by giving Tal a special script that was entirely gibberish.
Some Tals made up lines, others had their lines whispered to them by another
character. As a final insult Lady Catherine (who only had one arm due to
an old battle) was given a part that required juggling. All the parties
did a good job with the play, though, and got the circlet.
Here is the play - it is from Shakespear, word
for word.
- The Royal Kobold Imperial Guard: The original idea for these
guys was sort of a mental challenge - could a bunch of tiny creatures,
armed to the teeth, be dangerous? Indeed they can, when they're Tomar
Zepar's personal bodyguard. The RKIG had access to Javelins of Piercing,
an Apparatus of Kwalish, Axes of Whirling Spinning Death (basically
throwing axes that did lots of damage and could cut off limbs), Potions
of Speed, and Beads of Force. The Kobolds did huge amounts of damage before
going down.
- Tomar - Man, Myth, or Legend?: Eventually, all the parties in
the finals made it to Tomar himself. And it was there that Tomar explained
what he was. In fact there had been many "Tomar Zepars". When one Tomar
was ready to retire he chose a replacement. The current Tomar had had the
job for a decade or so - and thus was blameless for some of the party's
complaints. (If you're thinking this sounds a lot like the Dread Pirate
Roberts that was indeed our inspiration). Tomar offers to negotiate - they
could fight, but he's armed to the teeth and will probably kill them. What
the party didn't know was that Tomar was running a bit of a bluff - although
he has tons of magic items (Girdle of Storm Giant Strength, Cloak
and Ring of Protection +5, Vorpal Sword, and so on) Tomar was just a
first level fighter with 8 hit points. He got the job by being a great
administrator, not a warrior. One party attacked him, and won. The other
parties made a deal - generally a pledge never to invade the valley in
return for going away. One very clever group got him to agree to make
Kharis his successor, thus ensuring that "Tomar Zepar" would never again
threaten the valley.
