The Cities
Following are some of the important cities in South Korea.
* Seoul - the name means "capital". Seoul has about 10 million people, one-fourth of the nations' population.
* Incheon - a principal port lying to the west of the capital. Well known for Gen. Douglas MacArthurs' landing operations during the Korean war.
* Suwon - capital of Kyonggi-do province situated to the south of Seoul, is noted for the ancient gates and walls dating from the 18th century.
* Taejon - capital of Ch'ungch'ongnam-do province, Taejon is about two hours south of Seoul.
* Taegu - Koreas' third largest city, Taegu is famed as an important college town and as the center of Koreas' apple and textile industry.
* Kyongju - often called the "museum without walls"because of its numerous historical buildings and treasures, Kyongju is one of the most important historical centers of Korea.
* Pusan - Koreas' second largest city and principal port lying at the southwestern tip of the peninsula.
* Kwangju - is a major city in the entire west coast area.
* Cheju - Cheju-do island is an hours' flight from Seoul off the southwestern coast of the peninsula. The city of Cheju is both the location of an international airport and the center for various activities on the island.
