“The three-year conflict was a struggle against an unpredictable enemy amid extreme heat and cold. Although the border remained the same as before the war, at the 38th parallel it took an exacting toll on American forces. More than 54,000 service members died, over 100,000 service members were wounded, 7,140 became prisoners of war and 8,176 were Missing-in-Action.” (Korea: The Forgotten War, 2003)
6. Why was the war referred as the Forgotten War? The Korean War in 1950-1953 was referred as the “Forgotten War” because it came on the heels of World War II and it was overshadowed by the Vietnam War. Hardly anyone is talking about the Korean War but is only talking about the Vietnam War that was fought in 1963-1975. The Korean War only lasted for three years and it wasn’t as significant to the society. The Vietnam War, on the other hand, lasted over sixteen years. The Korean War was also referred as the Forgotten War because when the three years of war passed, there were no results to it. Both South Korea and North Korea didn’t Korea was part of the Cold War to stop communism in Southeast Asia. When North Korea’s troops invaded South Korea, the United States became involved because United States promised to support the president of South Korea. North Korea had the support of both the Soviet Union government and China’s military.Melanie 801
