Konalae Kennels

Aloha!  My name is Donna and I am the founder of Konalae Kennels.  I became interested in this breed about 3 years ago when I began looking for a new pet for our family.  What I found was far more than a pet, I found a friend, a companion, a dog I loved, a member of our family.

I  Nani was my first Japanese Spitz.  I had begun reseraching the different breeds out there and I wanted a smaller dog and I knew I wanted a white dog, that was it originally... I was won over by Nani and the Japanese Spitz the minute I saw her.  I purchased Nani in May 2003 here in Hawaii.

Because of Nani I began to research to find out more on the breed and found that the Japanese Spitz was considered a rare breed here in the United States, however, they were farely common in Australia and throughout the British Isles...  In the US the only kennel clubs that recognize the breed are the American Rare Breed Association and the Conntinental Kennel Club.  I found that I found only one breeder, at least that advertised on the web, in the US - Excalabar out of California.  The breed is more common here in Hawaii because they are easily imported from Australia by pet stores and the common individual as well.  I was intreguied.  I began to dig deeper and became good friends with a breeder in England, Houndbrae, and her husband the webmaster of Japanese Spitz Club of England.  They have been an invaluable couple!!

After reading many breeding books, talking to several breeders and talking it over with my family, I decided this is what I wanted to do.  And thus Konalae Kennels was born.

My family and I are a military family thus we do move about every 3 years.  So this was a big discussion in our family as to how much it would cost to import the dogs to Hawaii, I would only be able to import from Australia and the British Isles due to our quarantine laws but it would be mostly just from Australia as the travel cost and time for the dogs to get here from the Brisith Isles was too great.  The other factor would be the cost to ship the dogs to the mainland when we moved as well as to ship pups to the mainland for those who wanted to purchase pups from me.  All these factors weighed in on my decision but with my famiies support I opted to go for it and haven't turned back yet.

IAfter my purchase of Nani I was in need of a stud but there were few good studs here in Hawaii so I began the search for a new member of our family to begin my breeding stock.  I was lucky to find Warry from Western Australia who at the time was 19 months old.  I had him imported over and Konalae Kennels began.

Unfortunately we ran into complications with Nani as she developed ovarian cysts and had to be spayed to save her life.  It was a sad day.  It was the first eye opener for me to breeding, it's not easy in the slightests!  And it's not a money maker.  I hadn't gotten into this to make money so that wasn't an issue.  I wanted to show dogs and breed them to meet and exceed the breed standards... and that's what I'm out to do.

With Nani being spayed I had to search for another broad bitch... a breeding female dog.  In comes Holly, another dog I found in Australia.  She came to me in April 2005 at the ripe age of 9 months.

In the past 3 years a great deal has happened for me and my family.  We had to put our Rhodesian Ridgeback, Kainoa, to sleep due to health imparements - hip displasia, we moved from Florida to Hawaii (we'd lived here previously from 1995-1999) so it was like coming home.  We gainned 3 beautiful Japanese Spitz dogs, and now we are preparing to make another major move to San Antonio, Texas this December.  Even with the ups and downs that do occur in breeding, I'm still interested, I still want to continue and I'm loving it.

My family and I agreed when I started this up that our pups would be raised with our family as mamebers of the family and that's exactly what we've done.  My first liter was born on October 4th 2005 and it's been the most wonderful experience I could have asked for.
