The Ponca City Dodgers
This page is dedicated to the members of the 1951 pennant winning Ponca City Dodgers of the KOM League. Click on any underlined item and relive part of the past of a great era in baseball.
The Guy without shoulders on the left is Jack Wolfe of the '51 Ponca City Dodgers. The fellow on the right is his big brother Ed who pitched at Bartlesville of the KOM League in two different seasons. Ed later went up with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Joe Stanka on the left in photo with Diedrich Wiegand on the right.
Jack Wolfe and George Singer sit in front of the Drake Hotel in Carthage and read the Wall Street Journal. Well, at least it was the Carthage Evening Press.
Lyle Wiley and Don Stewart take it easy in their luxury suite at the Drake Hotel in Carthage. Stewart later became a professional hockey player in his native Canada.
Bobby Dolan and Cliff Ohr relax on the bed they shared at the Drake Hotel during a three day, two night stay in Carthage. Two players to a room cost the club $3 a night.
The mechanic on the right is Jack Wolfe. The guy with his face toward the radiator isn't known. Most KOM League buses spent a great deal of time beside the road-cooling off.
Bobby Dolan (left), Stan Santo (middle) and Jack Wolfe (right) pose for the first endorsement ever made by a Class D team. Bet you can't guess what it was.
George Scherger got his hair trimmed by Carthage barber, Bill Jarvis at the Drake Hotel. Long before Bill ever gave Scherger a haircut, Bill struggled to give this website editor his first haircut in 1941.
George Scherger the manager and Paul Vickery, the General Manager talk things over. Vickery had caught for the Iola Indians for a little while in 1948. Upon joining the Dodger organization he claimed to be the all-time greatest catcher in Iola history. No likely, since Buck Walz did the bulk of the catching from 1946 thru 1948.
Jack Wolfe on the right watches Joe Stanka play the pinball machine at the Drake Hotel in Carthage. It appears the machine is on a level plane which infers Joe had his feet under the legs to ensure a higher point total. How about it Joe?

Don Smith and Dick Wiegand were never located. If any reader of this website knows of the fate of Smith or Wiegand please pass along that information. |
Gathered around the pinball machine: Jack Denison, Jack Wolfe, Bobby Dolan, Ralph Cascella, Morris Mack and manager George Scherger. This photo was also taken at the Drake Hotel in Carthage. That hotel is now a residential living facility.
