Indonesian Internet
User and Broadband entering 2002 |
Happy New Year 2002 and after trying accessing your site
for several days at the end of Dec 2001 finally your
site is up again (maybe down for end of year maintenance
?)
Anyway glad to have you back because we also rely on
your data, this is why we also provide data on Indonesia
to you and thank you for the cooperation so far.
Following the workshop done by ITU called Internet in
South East Asia2001 , Komitel (Koperasi Komunitas
Telematika or Cooperative on Telecentre Community) a
cooperative on cybercafe in Indonesia made a study on
the internet user collected data from warnet (Indonesian
term of internet kiosk or cybercafe)
We expect the internet user in Indonesia around 4.4
millions entering year 2002 and more than 40 % of
Indonesian access internet thru internet kiosks and also
office is a favourite place to access internet.
Considering the number of population exceeding 220
million the density of the internet is still low
approaching 2%.
The number of internet kiosks at the end of year 2000 is
around 2,500 and we expect the number to exceed 3,000 by
the end of 2001 (,some of them are also act as
multiplayer game centre that is also popular in
Indonesia, playing Counterstrike in local area network).
Majority of these cybercafe or warnet still use dial up
POTS, especially in urban area, but in Jakarta area many
already use Cable Modem along with the cable TV for
their access (Hybrid Coax/Fibre).
Information from one largest Cable TV provider,
Cablevision is out of 70,000 cable TV user , around
2,000 houses, warnet and corporate account
use it for internet access. ADSL is still not popular
and ISDN has problem because of cable quality in last
mile.
There are other new cable TV provider such as Telkom
MMA(Multimedia Access) , Indovision, IM2 (Indosat Mega
Media) but the number of broadband internet access from
these new provider are still small compared to
Cablevision.
There are more than 150 ISP and about 5 NAP
(Network Access provider ) and 5 new VOIP licensing in
Indonesia at the end of 2001. Domestic Fixed Basic
Telephone service still provide by PT Telekomunikasi
Indonesia (Telkom ) and International line by PT Indosat,
Satelindo although in the near future Indosat and Telkom
can both provide domestic and international
telecommunication.
Some warnets(cybercafe) in a remote island in Sulawesi
use wireless WLAN 2.4Ghz to share VSAT access(asymmetric
uplink or downlink). Also wireless Outdoor WLAN is also
use in some cities in Jakarta, Jogyakarta, Bandung and
Surabaya because wireline is not readily available.
In the future VSAT and combination of one way downlink
receiver and uplink using the terrestrial wireline
infrastructure will be popular because Indonesia is an
largest archipelago nation, spread thru 13,000 islands
with three timezones and more than 70% of the area is
water or seas.
Whatever
people say .... for me this is the best.
Please pardon me, Happy Idul Fitri and also Happy
New Year
