Crater lake -

The crater lake is part of The crater lake national park located in Oregon. We reached crater lake towards later part of the afternoon. Part of the scenic Rim drive was closed. However we were still able to visit some of the more scenic lookouts.

The lake is the result of the eruption and collapse of Mt. Mazama almost 7000 years ago. It is surrounded by 20 mile rim of lava walls rising 500 to 2000 feet above water and covered with pine, hemlock and fir. The color is an indescribably brilliant blue and smooth as a mirror. The snow capped mountains in the background provide a magnificient contrast. For more information on crater lake, including directions goto Crater lake national park service homepage.
