Gateway to the
Himalayas
Lions guard the
stairway of Nyatapola Temple, in Kathmandu, Nepal. Situated on Durbar Square,
in the heart of old Kathmandu, the temple was one of the few buildings
to withstand Nepal’s devastating 1934 earthquake. A base for many treks
into the Himalayas, Kathmandu still captures the wanderer’s imagination
with its ancient, intricately decorated temples, its lively market atmosphere,
and nearby Freak Street, a relic of the 1960s influx of hippies.
