I teach English to children from
the ages of 8 months to 9 years old. It is so much fun, and I find all the
children irresistible, with vivacious personalities that I will always
remember. The style of teaching in SCA is almost revolutionary in its design, with emphasis being placed on inputing
as much information to the children in a 50 minute class, in order to stimulate
their right brain or creative imagination. Less emphasis is thus placed
on rote learning or repetition type materials.
I `input` this information by
flashing sets of cards (approx. 250-300 per lesson). I also dance with the
children, play games, read books and sing songs. The classes are so enjoyable,
it never ceases to amaze me that I am being paid a fantastic salary simply for
having fun! I really get a chance to use my personality in the classes, and as
there are never more than 6 students in similar age groups, it is a constant
challenge to think of exciting and innovative ways to keep the children (and
yourself!)amused.
I work Monday to Friday only, with
a maximum of 5 classes per day. One day a week is spent at the head office
assisting the other SCA teachers to make materials and
think of new and interesting topics to teach the children. Daily schedules vary
from school to school (as I teach at 3 different schools) but my shifts are
from 9 30am-5 30pm or 10am
to 6pm. This allows me so much
flexibility to pursue my other interests in Japan, such as socializing, going to the gym and traveling.
This company offers the best
opportunities for holidays and extra curricular pursuits of any Japanese
English Schools that I researched prior to accepting this position. In
addition, the foreign teachers are allowed to dress casually, in order to keep
pace with the children!
As the mothers, fathers,
grandparents or babysitters come to the classes with the children and
participate actively, I have developed so many special friendships that I@know I will always treasure. My time in Japan has only been enhanced by my experiences working with
Kohgakusha. I have great co-workers, both Japanese and foreign, with so much
support and kindness always provided. I am so glad I chose to work with this
company in Japan, and although there were a few transitional and cultural
differences to become accustomed to, everyone was extremely helpful and
patient. Not once can I say I have been homesick! Initially I was intimidated
by the concept of teaching as it was not my area of expertise, but I found that
with the willingness to learn, adapt to a new working environment and simply to
have fun with the children that I have been privileged enough to have witnessed
my children actually become more proficient at speaking English. It is an
inexplicable feeling to see what impact you are capable of having on such
little personalities. I truly feel honored to have been given the opportunity
to experience life in Japan, working with loveable children that are so fascinated by
everything you represent and will always remember fondly my time in this
diverse and amazing country!
