In
a thrilling, sporting and closely contested game Leixlip United Girls
under 16 won the Dublin Ladies Cup Final at the Soccer Sports Grounds,
National University of Ireland, Maynooth on Saturday evening the 14th
October 2000.
The game was played at a blistering pace throughout and it was only in the
last few minutes of extra time that Leixlip United managed to score the
winning goal. Though there were notable individual performances on
both sides of this contest ~ talent scouts from the National Ladies Team
should take note, this victory epitomized the importance of an overall
team effort.
Beal
na Mulla took the lead very early on in the first half with a well taken
goal. After sustained
pressure and a greater amount of possession Leixlip United eventually
equalised just before half time.
Beal
na Mulla came on strong in the second half and despite a slight dominance
failed to take the initiative. Both teams gave of their all in the
second half at the end of which they remained deadlocked. Some very
tired limbs faced into extra time. As energy levels dwindled and
with about three minutes to go Leixlip scrambled the ball home from a
corner.
The
setting at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth Soccer Sports
Ground was perfect for this Dublin Cup Final.
Both teams were well turned out and disciplined and were a credit
to their respective officials. The
pitch was in excellent condition and the evening was dry and sunny.
Fair and faultless officials supervised the match.
Team
Managers, their official's and supporters are a credit to their respective
localities for turning out two great teams.
The
Secretary of the Dublin League presented Leixlip United with the Cup at an
on-pitch ceremony immediately after the match.
Well
done Leixlip United ~ Keep up the good work
