In a thrilling, sporting and earnestly
contested semi-final, played at a blistering pace, Leixlip United
Girls managed to hold on to a one goal lead for most of the second half
thanks in no small way to a well drilled team effort and brilliant safe
goal-keeping. This victory epitomized the importance of an overall
team effort.
Leixlip took an early lead in the
first half with a very well taken goal.
After sustained pressure Peamount equalised just before half time.
Again, early in the second half
Leixlip took the initiative and scored a second quality goal. Peamount came back very strongly and their forays kept the
Leixlip defence under pressure resulting in some brilliant saves by the
Leixlip goalkeeper. Peamount
did find the net once but unfortunately from an offside position. Leixlip were dangerous on the break and could have gone
further ahead on at least two occasions.
The setting in Newcastle for this
semi-final was ideal. Both
teams were well turned out and disciplined.
The pitch was in excellent condition and the evening was dry and
sunny. Fair and faultless
officials supervised the match. The
Referee and his sideline officials are to be commended.
The ground staffs in Newcastle can certainly be proud of their
efforts.
The team Managers, their official's
and supporters are a great credit to their respective areas.
For taking the time and the interest to help foster develop and
maintain such an excellent, interesting, character-building and beneficial
sporting ideals, they deserve the highest credit.
This is certainly an area that should receive more financial
support.
Leixlip
will now play Beal na Mulla or Lourdes Celtic in the Cup Final 2000.
The date and venue for the match is
yet to be decided.
Details
will be placed on this site as soon as they become available.
