El Porro is a slower version of cumbia with vocals.  Its origin is related to the African-Indian cultural union on the north Atlantic coast of Colombia during the Spanish colony.  Porro was thus classified as the music of "black and Indigenous people", allowed only to be played after midnight.
It is usually accompanied by the "guapirreo", a collective shout between the men that has certain similarities with an Indigenous war cry
.

La Gaita is a faster version of cumbia.  It is exclusively instrumental and the interpretation of the "tambor alegre" and mainly of the instrument of the same name (gaita) are unique.
