OUR HISTORY Our Lady of the Lakes Council No. 3359 was organized and begun on October 15, 1950 under the guidance of District Deputy Daniel McCormick, who later became Supreme Treasurer. Their first social was a buffet supper for 250 people at 80 cents each. The council helped with the building of Camp Columbus for boys at Culver Lake and conducted many fund raising events for the construction of Morris Catholic High School and Convent. Throughout the 1950's and 60's activities included gifts to servicemen, drives against indecent literature, and a Bingo for St. Mary's Church. During the 1970's we were part of the initial group who began what has become nationwide famous as the drive for Retarded Citizens. We also became one of the first organizations in the St. Clare's Harvest Festival and began our annual Bus Ride to Washington, D.C. to take part in the March for Life. All three activities have continued uninterrupted to the present time. With the advent of the 1980's, we began to take part in a new program instituted by the Supreme Council to help foster vocations. Councils were asked to "adopt" a seminarian and not only offer financial support of $500.00 per year, but to write them on a regular basis and pray for their success. In the intervening years we have been blessed to sponsor five candidates, and four have become priests. We were also asked by the priests at the State Hospital at Greystone to provide escort service to patients for Sunday Mass. This program began with the help of two other councils, and although they dropped out within 5 years time, we have continued our participation, every other week, for the past twenty years thanks in part to numerous members. Throughout the 1980's and 90's we have taken part in an annual golf tournament known as the Pumpkin Classic. It has been held annually in the Fall and has raised thousands of dollars, which have been designated to fund all of our Youth Programs. These programs include a Little League Team, Soccer Team, Spelling Bee, Foul Shooting contest, Essay Contest, and graduation gifts to public and parochial school children in the area. Our visit from Santa Claus is always a highlight of the Christmas Season. We have also been participants in Project Children and the Joey Bella Fund. OUR PROSPECTS FOR THE FUTURE What are our prospects for the future? With the Council's history of winning Supreme Council awards such as the Father McGivney, Founders and Star Council and the caliber of members recently recruited and now holding office, the outlook is excellent.
