Basic Rules
- Trim your fingernails and toenails
- Remove jewelry
- Do not chew gum
- Do not whistle
- Keep your Gi (uniform) clean
|
Entering the DOJO (Building)
- Bow before stepping inside
|
Entering the DOJO (Mat area)
- Bow to SHOMEN (symbol at the front of the DOJO)
|
Starting the Class
- Sit SEIZA (kneeling) and wait for SENSEI (instructor)
to start the class
- Following him, bow to SHOMEN
- When he turns and faces you, bow to SENSEI and say, "ONEGAISHIMASU" ("I welcome you to train with me," or literally, "I make a request.")

During the Class
- Whenever SENSEI is explaining, sit SEIZA and listen carefully
- When up front, it is best to remain seated and listen
unless SENSEI is using you for a demonstration
- Before returning to your seat, do not forget to sit seiza
and bow to SENSEI and say, "ARIGATO GOZAIMASHITA" ("Thank you very much")
