Day Two: The Nightmare Begins

We are off to a cold and rainy start. Tent leaks right above my face. Suck it up, dress warm and hit the road. Have discovered butt balm today, thanks to Nick, and it will prove to be my rear-end's salvation, at least for the first 30 miles... We cruise alongside the Trans-Alaska Pipeline for a long while and I keep bragging to anyone who'll listen that my daddy did much of the x-ray work on it! This pic's for you, Dad!

The route today is hilly and difficult and my knees are beginning to pop with each crank of the pedals. The upside to all these hills is that the scenery is spectacular, in spite of the less than stellar weather. I arrive at lunch a wet, miserable, partially frozen, fairly pathetic wreck and slog around in the muddy quagmire that is our dining room trying desperately to get warm... see below.

Tonight we camp at the "Top of the World" very near the base of the Gulkana glacier. It is cold and it begins to rain again tonight. With lots of wind. The whole camp is in pandemonium as many tents are flooding and Jill is outside trying to batten down the hatches and keep our stuff dry. You go girl! I'll just cheer you on from the warmth and comfort of my sleeping bag. I'm not coming out until forcibly removed...
The Top of the World Campsite - that's the glacier in the background! Brrrr!!!
