| Flame of Recca revolves around a
16-year-old high school boy named Recca Hanabishi and his companions. Recca is the
son of a fireworks maker. He has an obsession about anything and everything on
ninjas. He even calls himself a ninja and said that whoever defeats him in
sparring; he’d be his or her personal bodyguard. Like a ninja, he uses the same
skills, techniques and weapons. But one weapon he doesn’t know he has is also the
true reason why he wears an arm protector on his right arm.

It started when he was having lunch after
school. He saw a girl about his age doing a part-time job with some preschoolers
and followed them. When they were passing a construction site, heavy pipes started
to fall and were about to hit the girl. Recca saved her but in result, he got
injured. The girl, whose name is Yanagi Sakoshita, healed him with her healing
powers and Recca’s life was spared. When he woke up, he ran off but Yanagi caught
up with him at the park. She told him what she did and Recca decided to be her
ninja and calls her Hime (Princess). He does so because she looks like the princess
in his dream.

What followed afterward is a chain of
unusual events. Recca and Yanagi meet a strange woman dressed in black with a weird
symbol on her right hand. She claims to be immortal and had tried to kill them just
to see his flame. So she toys with his friends, making them fight with him and
Recca soon found that he could create fiery red flames from his hand. It was later
in the show that he discovered that the woman (Shadow/Kagerou) is his 400-year-old
mother, looking in her twenties. Using the Forbidden Time Manipulation technique to
save her son, she was cursed by time and has no right to die. A more bizarre story
is that Recca has an evil older half-brother named Kurei who is also a flame
caster, and will do anything to kill Recca.

Kurei’s stepfather is a powerful but
sadistic man named Kouran Mori. Hoping to gain immortal life, Kouran had Yanagi
kidnapped because of her healing powers. Mokuran Nagai and his 13-year-old partner,
Kaoru Koganei (has a psychic device called the Adamantim Blade), easily kidnapped
Yanagi. Recca had no choice but to go off and rescue her together with the help of
his friends, Fuuko Kirisawa (a long time archenemy) and her God of Wind, Domon
Ishijima (another rival but weaker) with his Ring of Saturn and finally, Tokiya
Mikagami (an antisocial with a vengeance) using his family heirloom, Dark Water.

Upon reaching the mansion where Yanagi
was being tested, they encounter many dangerous obstacles. But they also made a
friend named Ganko Morikawa, who uses a psychic device that controls mannequins and
puppets. At the last battle, Kurei sends out his blue flame, which is by the name
Scarlet, to attack Recca. When it seems that they might lose, Shadow appeared and
told Recca to take off his arm protector. Recca does so and from his arm came fire
dragons with eight heads, said to be the most powerful of all psychic devices. In
exchange for one arm, Recca made a deal with the head dragon, Resshin, in order to
defeat Kurei and save Yanagi.

In the end, Kurei lost the battle and
left with his group alive. Reshin, however, didn’t take Recca’s sacrifice because
Yanagi begged him not to do so. Recca then set the mansion on fire. Meanwhile,
Kaoru told Kurei that he is leaving because Kurei had harmed Yanagi when he
promised he wouldn’t. Kurei watched him leave, saying that Kaoru will die alongside
Recca as a traitor in the next battle, for the story does not stop here.

In the next battle, the Hokage Team was
invited to participate in the Dark Martial Combat. It is a fight to the death
between teams. The contestant may come in singles or in groups and battle with any
weapons, psychic devices is preferred. Each group must have a human ‘gift’ to
protect. If they lose, the advancing group will have their weapons and the ‘gift’
shall go to Kouran for, just about anything. And Hokage’s gift was… Yanagi
Sakoshita.

The Hokage Team fought bravely against
their opponents. Throughout the way, they made new friends, discover different
devices and learn more of the Kurei’s Assassin Squad, The Uruha. They met a group
of martial artist who were wrongfully known as assassins from the North, Team Kuu.
Next they battle with Uruha Illusion, where they met an old enemy, Mokuran, and
saved a young girl who was forced to kill to protect her father’s
life.

In the next round, they fought with Uruha
Sound, where 3 loyal sisters are the very few who knows the secret of Kurei’s
flame, Scarlet, and his life’s misery with Kouran Mori. They jump to the
semi-finals easily as their next opponents were too injured to continue. But they
came across Uruha Magic, fearless warriors whose great powers and amazing psychic
devices earned them the title, Shadows of Uruha. As Team Hokage fought their way to
the top, they encountered new devices, gained wisdom and power as well as a
newfound sense of friendship for each of them.

In the last battle of the Dark Martial
Combat, they battle against Uruha Scarlet, whose members were carefully chosen by
Kurei himself. It was a battle to the death. In the end, a tie was to be decided
against the final battle of Recca and Kurei. Recca was able to summon Resshin, but
no help was gained for the arrogant Fire Dragon follows whomever that wins the
match. Kurei, too, unleashed his full power and conjured the Sacred Flame, Phoenix.
The fight for over 400 years between two greatest flame casters shall begin…
