listen, can we talk?
Listen, can we talk?  She asked and with the forming of the words
Knew the answer well before it found it's voice
"Sure" the answer came from behind a wall somewhere
The tone implying Listen-not-by-choice
So tentative she spoke in calm and lucid words
Heart pounding with frustration and despair
Silent screaming desperation to finally be heard
Needing reassurance, finding air
Empty heart and empty home, he tried to fathom what went wrong
Knew the answer well before it found it's mark
Listened disbelieving for her footsteps in the hall
Only silence echoed 'round him in the dark
