KUNUNURRA CYCLE CLUB
14th March 2008 "The committee and members of the Kununurra Cycle Club were deaply saddened to hear of the sudden death of club member Jim Hughes on Sunday morning. We offer our sincerest condolences to Jims family and friends and our hearts go out to Judy and Julia." Jim Hughes shock death (http://www.kimberleyecho.com/archive/2008/20080320/story1.html) ONE of the East Kimberleys main players over many years Jim Hughes died suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday. The father of the sugar industry in the Ord Valley; he was just 61. Mr Hughes had just returned from a 55km bike ride when he collapsed and died of a suspected heart attack. His funeral will be held on March 29 at 4pm at the Kununurra Cemetery. His wife Judy said she would like the occasion to be a celebration of his life rather than a sad affair. The ceremony will be immediatelyfollowed with a function at the Hughes property at 511 Riverfarm Road. Mr Hughes came to Kununurra in 1968 and has played a major part in its development and sporting life since then. He grew up on a farm near Kapunda in SA until he was about nine, when his father died and the family moved to town. After attending the local high school he went on to study at Roseworthy Agricultural College. Mr Hughes worked for the South Australian Department of Agriculture and on a sheep station before taking up a posting with the CSIRO in Kununurra. He arrived in the final days of cotton and worked at the Kimberley Research Station for four years. Mr Hughes farmed and became Inghams property manager, growing grains such as sorghum. He moved from chairman of the board of the Ord River District Cooperative (ORDC) to becoming its CEO on July 1, 1983 and was the main player instrumental in getting a sugar industry up and running in the Ord Valley. His leadership has taken the ORDC from a small operation to the significant investment business it is today, operating the Wyndham Port and the adjacent fuel farm. Some of his achievements include organising the export of maize to New Guinea, Indonesia and Singapore; the direct export of rockmelons to Singapore and Hong Kong; and the production of chick peas for human consumption for export to the Mediterranean. Long time friend Rob Boshammer said Mr Hughes always pushed himself to the limit, giving 100 per cent of himself. This also applied in the community and sporting fields. He was a Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow, Kununurra Citizen of the Year, a champion tennis player and club organiser, footballer, water skier and, in recent times, snow skier and cyclist. He has been the backbone of organising the Ord Valley Muster and Kimberley Moon Experience. Jim always had five or six projects on at a time, Mr Boshammer said. He also had a good sense of humour and was fond of a practical joke. Farmer and long-time friend Gabriele Bloeker said: Jim had a very strong personality and the ability to bring people to work together, an extreme strength, in an area where there has always been some very strong personalities.

19 January 2009 Welcome to the Kununurra Cycle club web site. We are a social club that cater for all types of cyclists. From the competitive to the social rider who likes to keep fit and enjoys a coffee after a ride. We do a social ride every Sunday. Have a look at our calendar of events and you will see that we try and cater for everyone, with club rides and some racing as well. For the competitive rider there are some big events this year, we have Trevor Floyd going to the National Track titles in Tasmania, Trevor Floyd, Keith Good and George Kemble going to the N.T Track Titles, and Trevor and Marian Floyd will be going to Ceduna Masters Games all in April. There is also the Barkly Challenge Two day tour in Tenant Creek, we will try and get more club members to come to this, its a great weekend. As we are so close to Darwin we try and travel there a couple of times a year for some of their events, just to have the race practice. The N.T Road Titles in June, and they have great criterum circuit on the Hidden Valley race track, so going up to compete is great fun as well as shopping / restaurants / movies etc. Our club is in the middle of making a few changes, as we are such a small club and are so far away from any other W.A Cycling club we are trying to amalgamate with Darwin Cycle club. This will take a while till we know if the club is allowed to do this, so until then we will carry on as usual.
