Why were they there that day? They were waiting for a client of theirs. Knuckles and his trusted co-workers brought with them, to an un-disclosed location in the Vale, three crates. These three crates were stacked with 10 million coins worth of white ambers. If everything was to go as planned, Knuckles and his co-workers were going to walk away from this deal with the infamous 'Crown of Princess Chonju'. It was rumored that the Crown was worth millions of coins. This was not why Knuckles wanted it. The Crown was a symbol, a symbol of Knuckles and his follower's absolute superiority over the black market. Knuckles had to have it, and was willing to use the three crates of white ambers as payment.
Who was his client? He was an old friend of Knuckles. A mole in the Buyan Imperial Army to be exact. Although Knuckles trusted his mole's ability to get the Crown itself, he did not trust his mole's loyalties. Another reason to be alarmed by his lateness.
The mole, Syagu, emerged from the shade of a tree in the distance. Knuckles could see him approaching their meeting point, but something was wrong. Syagu was limping. Knuckles checked around to his co-workers, signaling for them to stay stealthed.
As Syagu came closer Knuckles stepped out into the sunlight, and for a moment their eyes met, "You're late" Knuckles grinned.
At that moment an arrow flew out from behind a tree and Syagu slumped to the ground. Knuckles made a dive for the Crown, which was laying just feet away in the dirt, but at that moment at least forty Buyan Imperial Army soldiers charged out from the woods, headed straight towards Knuckles.
Knuckles' co-workers, all of whom are adeptly skilled with their daggers could take up to three men at a time, and Knuckles trusted their physical skills. Knuckles had trained them himself with daggers, but this was their first full-scale battle. Knuckles grabbed the Crown and shouted, "Fall-back -- meet in the Stealth Grotto!" But his words were not heard over the shouts and screams of battle.
Knuckles escaped into a small ring of tightly packed trees for a moments rest. There he found Lasahn herself standing in front of him, sword drawn. She charged him. Knuckles was an assassin, and could assassinate any man or woman out of concealment, but Lasahn was a trained warrior. She was stronger, better equipped, and caught Knuckles by surprise.
Knuckles ducked to the right but in an effort to sway her fatal swing the Crown was knocked from his hands. At this point five more Buyan Imperial Soldiers emerged from the woods. Knuckles drew out five throwing daggers and brought three of them to their knees in one throw.
Knuckles knew, at this point, that his life was more important than fetching the crown, and Knuckles turned to flee. That day he shouted that BIA would pay. That day he swore that he would get the Crown, by whatever means possible.
As Knuckles returned to the Stealth Grotto he was alarmed to find only five of his co-workers there, mending their many wounds. Arkanis, Venca, Interstate, Waterboy, and Daradan. It is rumored that that night they sat together and plotted their revenge. That they night they formed the Syndicate. That they formed the High Council -- which would come to be known as the Black Council for the many atrocious deeds they committed.
