The rule of no Realm is mine,
but all worthy things that are in peril
as the world now stands,
those are my care.

J.R.R. Tolkien,
The Lord of the Rings

The Order's Flag

The flag of the Royal Order of the Knights of Herne is a rectangular field of green, bearing a white cross saltire and two white four-pointed stars. In the center is a white oval containing a black image of Herne, surmounted by seven five-pointed stars.

The green field is symbolic of our connection to the sacred Earth, as we honor Her and partake of Her divine bounty. The white cross saltire signifies the four Pillars of Knighthood and the purity of these ideals. The two stars represent the Orders motto, Strength and Honor, a way of life that travels with us wherever we go. At the center of the flag is the image of Herne our Patron, surrounded by a white aura and seated under seven five-pointed stars. These stars represent the Order's seven degrees of achievement. Together with the two four-pointed stars, these nine stars represent the nine tenets of the Code of Chivalry.

The Order's Service Banner

The service banner of the Royal Order of the Knights of Herne depicts a black sword, edged in silver, on a field of green, the hilt surrounded by a golden circle surmounted with silver antlers.

The green field symbolizes our common background of earth-centered faiths. The black sword, the sword of truth and justice, symbolizes knighthood and the values of chivalry. Its silver edge reminds us that justice must always be tempered by mercy. The golden circle surrounding the sword's hilt symbolizes the Sun, representative of masculine divinity, and also the sacred circle of life. The silver antlers are the mark of Herne our Patron. The banner is in the shape of a shield and is hung from a bow suspended from a spear, reflecting the Orders chivalric roots.

  • The Order's Spiritual Banner

The spiritual banner of the Royal Order of the Knights of Herne depicts a man silhouetted in black and edged in silver, on a field of green, crowned by silver antlers and holding a golden torc in his right hand and a golden horned serpent in his left.

The design is based on the Gundestrup Cauldron, a Celtic artifact found in Denmark and dating from around 2000 years ago. The man represents the worldly essence of man himself, the masculine principle. The silver aura surrounding him and extending into the antlers of Herne symbolizes man's innate sacredness and divinity. The golden torc in his right hand and horned serpent in his left hand are traditional symbols of male divinity; the torc represents the spiritual power man is reclaiming by acknowledging his own sacredness, and the serpent, a phallic symbol, symbolizes his fertility, of the mind and heart as well as the body. The dark green background symbolizes that man must connect to the earth, not some transcendental, remote heaven, to find himself and recognize his divinity.
