Some people have already taken offence at my sub-heading, 'Imbeciles for Jesus'. My comment was prompted by a recent television documentary on the ABC called, "The Cult of the Virgin".
Even at age 60 I can still be amazed. The spectacle of millions of gullible Catholics grovelling and crawling on their knees towards a plaster statue, making absolute and utter fools of themselves worshipping a hot-blooded temptress who was pregant months before her wedding but who had the chutzpah to con her gormless fuck-buddy into believing that she had been impregnated by a "holy ghost" � wow � it fair took my breath away.
Prior to the Nicea Council in 325, no one had contemplated the possibility that Mary (mother of five children!) was a "virgin", but towards the end of the fourth century it was decided that she'd never had a pee-pee up her ho-ho. The 'gospels' were ammended to include this snippet of hot news and the cult of the virgin was launched.
The link between sex and "sin" was now firmly established and fixed in the minds of church leaders. Jesus was already in the clear but somehow they had to explain how Mary had been conceived. They needed another "sinless" conception.
Arguments raged and wars were fought, but in 1854 some wag, (actually, Pope Pius 1X), decided that, not only had Jesus' birth been a "virgin" job but Mary too had been conceived as a result of divine intervention. God had impregnated Mary's mother! This became known as the "Immaculate Conception". There was even some talk that Mary had been expelled from her mother's ear because the thought of her passing through a vaginal canal was too much for these prissy, sin-obsessed morons to bear.
Still not satified with the "Immaculate Conception", in 1950 it was decided that Mary hadn't died, rather she had been transported bodily up to heaven, just like Jesus. The priestly caste called this 20th century afterthought, the "Bodily Assumption", and they rightly assumed that Catholics would fall for it. Thus, this woman who Jesus felt nothing but contempt for, this Palestinian slut who scarcely gets a mention in the gospels, became a fully fledged GODDESS! A Goddess for millions of poor, pathetic simpletons to worship and revere.
Why does this bother me? It bothers me because people who can so easily be convinced of such patently absurd nonsense can just as easily be maniplated to kill and die for their beliefs. All they'd need is a message from Mary, originating in the mind of a murderering priest, instructing them to slaughter Muslims, atheists, Protestants or Asians, and they'd go right ahead and do it.
They would have no qualms about launching a nuclear attack on "the enemy of God" because the Blessed Virgin Mary desired it. And if millions of children, including their own, died, so be it. It's God's will.
