The materials list for the cheap canoe is a small one. I only purchased what I needed to get to phase two...measuring and cutting the plywood. So I went to Home Depot and bought 3 sheets of 1/4 inch Fir for $23.00 (Canadian). The plans only ask for two but I would like to build decking and compartments on my cheap canoe.

Epoxy is a little pricier than the plywood apparently. The West System resin was $108.95 and the West System Fast Hardener was $43.95 and West System Colloidal Silica was $11.95. The pumps that go into the resin and hardener cans were $17.95. I would recommend getting these. Measuring out 5 to 1 everytime would be a real chore. I also purchased 10 yards (by 5 feet) of biaxial fibreglass cloth. That was at $10.95 a yard. I cut strips from this to do my seams. I plan on completely covering the bottom with cloth. I want to be able to run into rocks without worrying about sinking... immediately.

Note a small can of acetone is a profoundly useful for cleanups. Nitrile gloves and a mask are a safety must. I wore gloves but not a mask as I had excellent ventilation. Small plastic containers are needed as mixing cups. I used empty margarine and honey contatiners. (Thanks Marg!) Some cheapie paint brushes are better to use than expensive ones. You can soak the paint brushes in acetone after, but they seem to harden up anyways. A small diameter paint roller is a great thing to have for removing air bubbles.

Wax paper is a useful for placing in between curing epoxy and the outside world. The epoxy won't stick to it so you can clamp it and rest things on it and it also helps to stop the panels from sticking to your bench.

Clamps are a essential, too. You can use rings of PVC pipe with a notch cut out. I bought some from Home Depot on sale.

In this plan, instead of stitch and glue it is more like duct tape and glue. So... you'll need some good quality duct tape and some sharp scissors.

I used a small rubber spatula for making the fillets. What a great, cheap little device that was perfect for that application.
