| SEARCH ENGINES - GOT TO USE SEARCH ENGINES My favorite is www.yahoo.com, if there is any site out there that lists what you want, you will probably find it here. TIP -- to search for a specific name only use "exact phrase" if more than 1 word. Here is a search engine for www.geocities.com, it will list only sites created at Yahoo! GeoCities. |
| THE OLD ONES Now, if anyone is going to know family stories, histories, ect., it is going to be the grandparents. They can tell you all kinds of things - - family fights, what kind of people they were, how they lived, where they came from . . . . . . . . . . When I ask my grandma who someone is she starts way back with, "Well, do you know Sam who married Margie who had a daughter Elizabeth that had a son named Thomas who married Thelma that lived in Texas when Sarah (the person I asked abouts mother) was born?", yes granny. "Jennifer is Sarah's daughter". If you can just remember all those names you have 4 generations right there! BIBLES, LETTERS, JOURNALS/DIARIES, NEWSPAPERS When I was a little girl I could tell you almost every boy my sister had a crush on. I would sit and read her diary for hours getting revenge! Now I know old diaries are special ways of reliving someone's life. They can tell you so much with just little entries. Newspapers are a great way of finding marriages, births, and deaths. Also special honors and anniversaries. So check newspapers before tossing them! Old Bibles usually have places for you to write down the births and deaths of the family. In some you can find places where you can write down Military Service information. My grandma has an old family Bible that is full of family births, deaths, marriages, divorces, and her dad's army info. Ask your parents and grandparents to keep letters they recieve from other relatives. This is a good way to find the updates of who was born, who got married, where people moved, and more. ATTEND FAMILY REUNIONS I went to the Faulkner Family Reunion in 2002. It was so fascinating seeing all the great aunts and uncles, long distant cousins and friends. At most reunions there is some type of poster that displays old photos - - ask the owner to send you copies (with your penny if required). And most likely someone is going to have a family book full of information with what you just might be looking for. HINT -- If they have your address you will probably get an invitation to attend, if not, ask around until you find out where the reunion will be located. COOK-OUTS, HOLIDAYS, BIRTHDAYS, SPECIAL EVENTS Try to hit those baby showers, Christmas dinners, cook-outs, and any special event you have been invited to attend. Some people won't like to be bothered by questions and some might. Just don't bug them about. Make friendly conversation and ask when they were married, how many kids they have and so on. Don't just ask questions and leave. Enjoy the time you have with them and get to know them. After all they are family. VACATIONS VACATIONS VACATIONS Say your going on a summer vacation and it just so happens you have relatives buried in a cemetery just a state away. Try to stop by the cemetery and find the headstone. Most recent ones will list children and grandchildren or the parents. They also have birth and death dates! Or if your taking a vacation to a relatives house . . grab your pen and paper and ask for a good time to talk about getting some information from them for your research. Try to make it possible to get it before head home because you may never get it. Spend time with whom ever your visiting and get to know them better than you think you do. Family time is fun time and without family you have no tree. And family is the most important to life. |
