MGB stands for Mini Gastric Bypass surgery. This surgery is used to treat morbid obesity. It is performed laparoscopically through five small incisions, and it involves making the stomach smaller as well as bypassing part of the intestines.
I had the MGB on August 2, 2000. It was performed by Dr. Robert Rutledge. My surgery took 38 minutes, I was only in the hospital one night, and I had no complications. My weight before the surgery was 255 pounds. I have since lost approximately 120 pounds. My weight has been fairly stable since the middle of January, 2002. I fluctuate between 130 and 136 pounds. As I write this I weigh 134 (give or take half a pound). I have gone from wearing a size 22-24 to a size 6-8. This surgery has truly been a miracle for me. My health is much better, I have much more energy, and I feel much better about myself. I am able to do many things with ease that were VERY difficult for me before the surgery, such as walking anywhere without getting tired and breathless, caring for my small children (see the ADOPTION page), and handling two part time jobs (see my USBORNE BOOKS page) without becoming totally exhausted.
After much research, I chose the MGB over other types of surgery for morbid obesity because it has a very short operating time (less time under anesthesia), it is done laparoscopically, it has a very low complication rate, it has a short and relatively easy recovery period, and it can be easily reversed or revised should the need arise. I chose Dr. Rutledge to perform the surgery because he is an excellent surgeon, he developed and is an expert in this particular surgery, and at the time I had the surgery he had performed over 800 of them (he has now done well over 1300).
Below are some before and after pictures of me. I will try to add some better after ones soon. You can also see before and after pictures of me (at the point where I had lost 100 pounds) and other MGB patients at this web site: http://www.mgbfriends.com/
If you are interested in the MGB please see Dr. Rutledge's web site. Please feel free to email me if you have questions about my experience with the MGB.

This is me at 255 pounds, before I had the MGB. I was not as happy as I look.
This is me with my family at the end of December 2001. I am sitting in the chair holding our two year old. My husband and all of our children, except for our oldest daughter who had already returned to college, are in this photo. (See my ADOPTION page.)
