IB Math Studies Project Guidelines
Main Purpose
The main purpose of this project is to give you a chance to develop a personal insight into the nature of mathematics and develop your ability to ask your own questions about mathematics. This project will enable you to initiate and sustain a piece of work in mathematics that is truly your own. This will enable you to acquire confidence in developing strategies for dealing with new situations and problems no matter where they occur. You should be able to use this project to also see connections and applications of mathematics in other areas of interest outside of the "typical" mathematics settings.
Objectives
This project will be internally assessed based on a set of assessment criteria developed to address all of the objectives in the IB group 5. The objectives of this project that the criteria is based on will include:
-organizing data and information in tabular, graphical and/or diagrammatic forms
-being able to know and use appropriate notation and terminology
-recognizing patterns in a variety of situations
-recognizing and demonstrating an understanding for practical mathematical applications
-the ability to use appropriate technological devices as mathematical tools
-demonstrating an understanding of and appropriate use of mathematical modeling
Requirements
This project is a piece of written work based on personal research involving the collection, analysis and evaluation of data. Make sure that you make use of the mathematics learned as part of this course. You will be able to choose from a wide variety of project types such as modeling, investigations, applications, and statistical surveys, but historical projects that reiterate facts should be avoided. Every project must contain:
-a title
-a statement of task
-measurements, information or data which has been collected and/or generated
-an analysis of the measurements, information or data
-an evaluation of the analysis
-a bibliography and footnotes, as appropriate
