To create the necessary volume to produce sound from a bar chime, there needs to be a reverberation chamber to amplify the sound.  In Standard Box formats, the necessary chamber volume is created by creating variously sized chambers within the wooden box.  Each of the chambers are the same length, with additional wooden walls placed at different lengths to create the appropriate chamber volume.
