Men Have Forgotten God

" For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof. " Hosea 8:14 ( KJV )

Before the world can be changed, your heart must change. In his 1983 acceptance speech for the Templeton Prize for Progress in religion, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn recalled the words he heardas a child when his elders sought to explain the ruinous upheavals in Russia: " Men have forgotten God; that's why all this has happened." He added, "If I were called upon to identify briefly the principal trait of the entire twentieth century, here too I would be unable to find anything more precise and pithy than to repeat once again: " men have forgotten God."

It is true of our society today that men have forgotten God. In a time when the Ten Commandments from courtrooms are being taken down, prayer banned from schools, and our national motto is questioned; it is clear to see that people have forgotten the God who has blessed this nation.

In our verse, Hosea is lamenting that the Israelites had forgotten God. Their sacrifices to false gods were displeasing to Him. They had built up their city and expanded beyond their borders, yet they had forgotten God.

America, much like Israel, was originally founded on the truths of God's Word. Our Founding Fathers looked to the Bible for guidance in establishing a nation. Yet now, it can be safely said that men have forgotten God.

What can we do about the spiritual condition of America-and all nations for that matter? How can we make a difference in a land that has forgotten God? Remember Jesus' last command-go and tell, " Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen" ( Matthew 28:19-20 ) KJV.

There was a reason one of the last things Christ told the disciples was to go and tell others of Him. More important than reminding them of His miracles, pointing them to the future, or talking about the spiritual condition of their world, was His command to get the Gospel out.

What do you think it will take for people to turn to Christ? As God says, " How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?" (Romans 10:14). In order for our world to turn back to Christ, it's going to take you personally telling those around you of God's love for them. Before the world can be changed, your heart must change.Do you see the world as Christ sees them-souls He died to save? Do you have a burning desire to see others saved? Many people say they wish our nation and the world would change, but few do anything about it. Determine in your heart today that rather than talking about the problems of the world, you will be part of the solution by spreading the Gospel to as many peoples you encounter.

In His Vineyard,

Rev. Joseph Teruel
