At issue:
In Matthew 27:28, the robe was "scarlet",
and in Mark 15:20 and John 19:2 the robe was "purple".
While in Luke 23:11 it was said to be a "gorgeous" robe.
So what color was the Robe that was placed on Jesus at the crucifixion. Was it Purple or Scarlet?
I believe that no word in the Bible is used for filler or vainly wasted in the passages.
In the pages of the Bible you will see words used as symbols and themes to bring out deeper meanings.
If the problem you are having is a particular word or set of words in your English translation of the scripture,
you need to go deeper into the Hebrew and Greek words from which your translated English words are derived.
It is the Hebrew and Greek words that form the text of what God actually said.
This paper came about from reading through Numbers where I found this verse in chapter 4 verse 13:
And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon:
Jesus Christ is the reality of the images in the Old Testament. So then,
this reference in Numbers to the covering of the burnt sacrifice with a purple cloth must point to Jesus.
The covering of the sacrifice is a picture of the robe worn by Jesus at his crucifixion.
Luke 24:26-27
"Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?"
Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
So I wanted to insure that I had notes to cross reference this image
with the finished work of Christ in the gospel accounts.
I found that the colors were different.
oh no.
There are some principles to follow in Biblical interpretation.
The first is that the context of any passage needs to be viewed in light
of the other passages within the book. The principal of Internal Harmony indicates
that no verse stands on its own.
2 Peter 1:20-21
Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation.
For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man,
but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Teach the Word correctly.
2 Timothy 2:15
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed
and who correctly handles the word of truth.
The phrase "correctly handles" is the Greek word orthotomeo
and is used only one time in the entire Bible.
- 1) to cut straight, to cut straight ways
- a) to proceed on straight paths, hold a straight course, equiv. to doing right
- 2) to make straight and smooth, to handle aright, to teach the truth directly and correctly
So then with the rules laid out, let us look at the depth of the colors here.
You will see in the resolution of the issue the vast tapestry of God's word.
And indeed the statement that nothing is wasted and nothing is meaningless will be born out.
This turned into a wonderful study filling me with a renewed confidence in the text of scripture.
Soli Deo Gloria.
If you do a word search on "robe", you will see the story of Jacob and Joseph in Genesis 37.
We have said that the Bible speaks of Jesus. Joseph is a prefigure of Jesus Christ.
The images of Joseph in Genesis 37 are quite similar to the images of the crucification of Jesus.
Genesis 37:3
Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age;
and he made a richly ornamented robe for him.
In the King James version, it is a
Coat (keth-o'-neth)
of
[many] colours (pac).
The rest of the references to this word translated coat or robe deal with the garments of
the priests in the service of the temple.
The counts.
There are 29 usages of purple and scarlet (crimson) together in the book.
In Exodus and Revelation.
Within the pages of Exodus, you see the construction of curtains of the temple.
In Revelation you will see the two Anti-Christs.
In terms of the Religious system, Revelation 17:4, you see the woman on the beast.
And the world system, Revelation 18:12 and 18:16, you see the goods for sale.
There is one place where both scarlet and crimson (towla Strongs 08438) are used together.
Isaiah 1:18
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

When the female of the scarlet worm species
was ready to give birth to her young, she would
attach her body to the trunk of a tree, fixing
herself so firmly and permanently that she would
never leave again. The eggs deposited beneath
her body were thus protected until the larvae were
hatched and able to enter their own life cycle.
As the mother died, the crimson fluid stained her
body and the surrounding wood. From the dead
bodies of such female scarlet worms, the commercial
scarlet dyes of antiquity were extracted. What a picture
this gives of Christ, dying on the tree, shedding his
precious blood that he might "bring many sons unto glory"
"#Heb 2:10" He died for us, that we might live through him!
"#Ps 22:6" describes such a worm and gives us this
picture of Christ.

When these colors first come up in the scripture (Exodus 25:4), we see it is a free will offering.
To then be used in (Exodus 26) for the curtains of the tabernacle.
And in (Exodus 28) for the clothing of the priest.
Exodus 25:1-4 as the offering.
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring me an offering: of every man that giveth it willingly with his heart ye shall take my offering.
And this [is] the offering which ye shall take of them; gold, and silver, and brass,
And blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats' [hair],
Exodus 26:1) for the curtains of the tabernacle.
Moreover thou shalt make the tabernacle [with] ten curtains [of] fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet: [with] cherubims of cunning work shalt thou make them.
Exodus 39:27-30 The clothing of the priest.
And they made coats [of] fine linen [of] woven work for Aaron, and for his sons,
And a mitre [of] fine linen, and goodly bonnets [of] fine linen, and linen breeches [of] fine twined linen,
And a girdle [of] fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, [of] needlework; as the LORD commanded Moses.
And they made the plate of the holy crown [of] pure gold, and wrote upon it a writing, [like to] the engravings of a signet, HOLINESS TO THE LORD.
Does the Bible draw these symbols together?
Jesus is both the tabernacle and high priest.
In Hebrews 10:16-22
This [is] the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
Now where remission of these [is, there is] no more offering for sin.
Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
And [having] an high priest over the house of God;
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
Now in the times of the End, you will see an attempt at deception.
Rev 17:4-5 The counterfeit: Sometimes Anti Christ can be an attempt to be in the place of Christ.
And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet color, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
And upon her forehead [was] a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
