UP NURSING STUDENT
COUNCIL HOLDS FORUM - Youth Speak Series 2003 no. 2
Joana Paola M. Espinoza
Be
heard. This seems to be the message last February 10, 2003 at the
forum entitled "Ang Alamat ng Lawin: The Youth Speak about the Current
Exodus of Filipino Nurses to Foreign Countries" conducted by the
Publicity and
Issues Committee of the Nursing Student Council from the University of
the Philippines - Manila. It was conducted at 02:30 PM on the UPCN
Auditorium.
The forum tackled the timely crux regarding the exodus of Filipino
Nurses. It is quite apparent that with their recent shortage of
professional
nurses, progressive nations like the United States and England have
turned to the common practice of importing professionals from
neighboring
states. The Filipino Nurse, with her caring nature and natural
competence, is
an obvious target for such importation. With the attractive salaries and
provisions that enable the whole family to be immigrated with you,
Filipino nurses grab the chance to hop to greener pastures leaving our
own
country lacking of health care professionals. Indeed, this issue will
soon
become a national crisis.
This
forum aimed to find out the youth’s perspective about the topic
previously explained. To enable them to see the whole picture, three
speakers discussed different aspects the topic. The first speaker was
Professor Emeritus Julita Yabes, a faculty of the UP College of Public
Health. She discussed the push and pull factors that determine a
Filipino Nurse’s decision to leave the country. The second speaker was
the
Honorable Ruth Padilla who is the President of the Philippine Nursing
Association. She discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the
immigration of
our nurses. She also stated the official stand of the Association about
this delicate issue. The last speaker was Mr. Dominic Paguio, a nurse,
who
works at the Philippine General Hospital. He stated in full vigor his
rationale and motivation that keeps him in staying here at the country.
Participants of the forum also included delegates our very own UP
College of Nursing as well as delegeates from other Colleges of Nursing.
These
delegates represented their respective student councils. These schools
were: Philippine Women’s University - Manila and Quezon City branch,
University of Perpetual Help - Rizal, Chinese General Hospital,
Martinez Memorial College, Centro Escolar University and Philippine
Christian
University.
Truly, voices were heard.
